Tires for my M???

I want to put new back tires on my m this spring. Got new front's on last fall. I got a price from the garage in town on new tires. He gave me a price for KELLY tires, $380 a pop. They are 13.6-38. some people say get michelin radials put on. I don't pull, i might this year at the steam show tractor pull, and i pull a plow in the plowing match that is it. So, are Kelly's good tires? If not what kind do you suggest? What is the price for radials?
What size tire did they come out of the factory with?

Being a tire dealer that handles Michelin, BF Goodrich,Titan,Primax and Firestone tires,I can tell you that any of these tires would serve you well in your application. Each brand has its own attributes such a bar angle , ply rating , and casing construction. You need to get in contact with a informed local dealer who will not only want to sell you a tire ,but will want to sell you the right tire for your application. I sell about 100 rear farms per month and about 25% of our sale are to customers who are restoring antique tractors.
As for price,
13.6-38 6p BF Goodrich power grip -238.00 mtd
13.6-38 6p Primax-220.00 mtd
13.6-38 6p Titan -265.00 mtd

I've got 15.5-38 traction feild and road firestones on the SM, the H is going to get cheapo's but it doesn't do a whole lot. Wouldn't go with anything else but titan radials on the big ones, but for a tractor thats more for recreation use any tire should be fine. Going with 14.9's would give you a slightly wider footprint and will be much cheaper than the radials too.

Scot: He has already told us he has 12" rims. They are designed for 13.6 tires, nothing else. As for your bloomin radials, I wouldn't pay a cent more than for bias, they aren't worth it. Tried it 20 years ago, and sent them back. Sure they will pull more on hard roads, but how much farming does one do on a hard road.

I'd have to disagree with you on this one. Our bias-tire 4x4 1066 won't pull a whole lot more than our radialed 1066 4x2. On anything bigger than a 756 I'd go radial or traction feild and road, our smaller tractors that don' do any tillage work get bias tires. The 2+2 had bias when we got it, and chopping on a hillside can get real hairy sometimes. The 7580, its got the original bias tires,and it won't turn out of a rut.

Scot: I was running a 1066 4x2 around 1/4 century ago when radials first came out. Tire dealer brought me a set of radials mounted on rims to try out as I was ready for my second set of tires. The original tires had been 18.4x38. The radials were 20.8x38. Sure they are better but not enough better in my opinion. I went to 18.4x38 bias dualed and 9,000 hours later those duals were still on the tractor. I also pulled an NH 890 forage harvester and used 20' aluminum highway dump trailers, pulled by a tow dolly behind harvester. It's nothing more than money in my back pocket that counts.

Don't know where your're farming at, sounds like you got some pretty flat ground. Our dump wagon carries 5-6 tons loaded light behind the 1275 gehl and we've got some hills that we only go up. Pulling up is ok but holding back kinda creates a pressure deficiancy. 25 years ago truckdrivers and trucking companies said the same thing about radials too, but now bias tires on a over-the-road truck are few and far between. But now, as before, we're talking opinions, so i guess its ok to agree to disagree, right?

Scot: Yes I did farm some quite flat land, and after I bought 1066 and 890 harvester, the moving of silage to keep it running became a real bottleneck. One thing I found is those aluminum trailers didn't weigh a whole lot more than a big self unloading wagon, and with the amount of rubber under them pulled just as easy. I see guys around here today using these tow dollies on grain trailers, and some of them have air compressors on their tractors so as to operate the trailer brakes. Saw one at elevator 300 hp articulated Deere pulling a set of super B trains 40 tons net.

As for the radials to each his own. Don't get me wrong I did like the radials, just didn't want to part with that much money. I have been running them on my cars and trucks since they first appeared. I did use a single axle highway tractor on the farm, as I found farm tractors just couldn't keep up on hauling silage, plus I had a traffic situation that didn't blend well with tractors. I decided if folks wanted to drive like maniacks on rural roads, they may as well bounce off a highway tractor trailer as a farm tractor.

It was just 4 years ago we got away from silage wagons and went to hauling everything with the dumptrucks, got to traveling too far to find land.Chopping straight into the dumps sounds interesting but our roads aren't real good for that, I had enough fun coming home every 2 weeks with a 53 footer axles slid full forward.

Kid: Your price does sound a bit high, however not as much difference as this discussion has led one to believe. Remember you are quoting Canadian dollars and most if not all of these guy are quoting US dollar. Remember your quote of $380. is roughly $285 US money. Still a bit high.

In the last few years I have replaced tires on 5 tractors. Every set from a different dealer. Shopped around hard. Farmall Kid if you r shoppping in Canada $1000-1100 a pair with tubes is the norm for 38's. If it is possible to bring them over the border without too much added cost, the changing dollar is making "southern" purchases less painfull.

If it's a straight M, 13.6-38's are about right. If 12 in rims, 13.6's; if 13 in rims, 14.9's. Better shop around-I just bought a PAIR of 13.6-38 Kelly- Springfields for $362.

FarmallKid, i'm not sure where your at, but here(ohio)
i got a price for 15.5-38's at $210 a piece.
now that is for my 706 and they said the ones for my M would be much cheaper. that being 13.6-38. so you can find them cheaper.thats my 2 cents and good luck.

I had a 13.6-38 tire replaced on my 300 two weeks ago. The tire was $210, tube was $30, rim repair (4"x4" plate at valve welded in and sanded such that paint will make it disappear as a noticable repair)$40, tire disposal, the Minnesota Haz Waste Fee and tax came to $310.

Not a major brand tire but a good "no name type made either by BF Goodrich or Goodyear-I forget which". 23 degree bars.

A bit pricier than my 11.2-28s but bigger tractor too.

FARMAWLKID; Don't be in a rush to get poked by some higher priced dealer. Take your time and look for better deals. Get a feel for several tire sizes or treads and prices. Go to the following website (I am sure there are others near your location also) .... sales@tiretown.com
They have 3 locations in Kansas(Olathe, Shawnee, Leavenworth). As a sample they offer 12.4 X 38
tractor tires for 185 new or 125 used. Of course
if you really want to drop 616 for two I hope that includes a free mounting of both and 2 years of tire damage insurance. Good luck.

In our area most came from the factory with a 12-38 tire. That size was updated by the manufactures to a 13.6-38. In Iowa, I can buy a 13.6-38 6 ply Titan or Firestone for $240. Is the Kelly a long-bar short-bar? I think that the Titan has heavier bars than the Kelly if it is. I think that radials would be an overkill for you.

One more question. Will 13.6-38 fit on 12-38 rims? My grandpa is looking for a 12-38 tire for his tractor.I think they would. I don't know much about tires yet.

I just put 13.6" Firestones on 12" rims. Seems to work just fine.

I would recommend you stay with bias tires on an M. The M does not have enough horsepower to notice any difference in tracton between bias and radial, bias are generally less expensive, and radials do not look right on a M. If you want original look, pick bias ply tire with aprox 45 degree lugs (not 23 degree field & road). This is just my opinion.

$380.00 a piece sounds a little high to me, I had 13.6 x 38, Firestone Traction Field and Road tires put on my H last fall for $208.00 a piece, new, 6 ply. Why so high?
