Transmission Oil

I am in the process of restoring my '53 Super H and have a question about which transmission oil to use. I am concerned about the gaskets leaking oil, since i have not and plan on not replacing them. One parts man says to use 80-90 and another says that 80-90 is to thin and will leak everywhere and to use straight 90W instead. I would appreciate any input.

Not to be nasty, but you are not restoring if you are not replacing seals and gaskets. Clean it up and paint it and I guarantee you you will have leaks, no matter what oil you use. If it leaks with 80W-90, it will also leak with 90 and probably 140. It will darn sure leak with Hytran.

Definetly the thicker the better with bad seals, but if you use the thinner oil just keep a check on the level every now and then. If you have fire ants in your area you can take care of them by parking over top of the hill and keep moving it around. Works about as good as ortho you buy at the hardware.

I use 90w in both my M's and it works fine in summer and winter. No leaks

Case IH service manager said I could us Hy Tran in my M if seals were good. Had no problems with it. Used the M for my loader tractor.

I use 80W-140 in my TD9 transmission, it works fine even in the winter. I would change leaking oilseals. /Dennis
