My father in law and I are restoring his fathers 1939 Farmall A and the first order of business is to rebuild the engine due to a cracked block. We have a new block and parts on order to rebuild it but our first problem is getting the harmonic balancer pulley off the end of the crank shaft. We have removed the set screw and jamb nut from the rear of the pulley but arent quite sure how the pulley is attatched other than that. Any information on whether this is a press fit, taper shaft, keyed shaft or threaded shaft would be most helpful along with any tips on removing it.

I had a big problem getting the pulley off my A until I got an OTC pulley puller. Below is a link to the one I got. Be sure to get the reccommended 2-jaw puller to go with it. Don't put it in the groove but place it behind the flange so you are pulling against the thickest part of the pulley.

You can also take the crank/pulley and front cover off all as one and use a press to get the pulley off. This is what worked good for me.

The pulley around the edges can be fragile so please take it slowly and get to pull on something solid. many of use have taken a chunk out of the edge of the pulley.

Yes that was our major concern as well Kurow, avoiding damage to the crank or pulley will certianly save us time and money on the project.

Shad, The crankshaft pulley is a press fit on the crankshaft, it is a .0015-.002 press fit, making it difficult to remove. You will need a split bearing puller to remove it. You will position the puller on the back of the pulley using care not to crack the outside groove. Also sometimes the use of heat will help it break free.You can get a puller at NAPA or through Northern etc.
