I just bought an 806 rolling chassis, everything is good, TA ect... but with no engine. I was thinking about either finding and puttin the german back in her, or maybe tradin up to somethin a little more parts friendly.

What is everyone's thoughts on this, who did this before?

My main concern is with finding a "running" engine out of an 806. Also aren't rebuilds on these engines getting a little pricey too?

The D310 German came in the late 706 and all the 756. Your 806, if it's a diesel, came with the D361.

You can put practically any "modern" 6-cylinder IH engine in that tractor with the right back and front covers. Either of the German diesels, the D310 or D358, will bolt in with minimal modifications. So will the D407 from an 856. The trick is finding a usable engine and not paying a fortune for it.

I found a DTA360 out of a lightly-used prison bus on Ebay that's going in my Dad's 756. The newer "wet sleeve" engines start a lot better than any of those older engines. These include the D360, D414, D436 and D466, along with their DT (turbo) counterparts. They're a little more involved than a simple bolt-in. All four will require modification of the front cover if you plan on using the original frame rails. It's too wide by about 1-1/2", so you need to cut about 3/4" off each ear. The 414/436/466 will require lengthening the frame, or the use of 66-series frame rails.

The nice thing about the D360 is that it's the same length as the older engines, so you don't have to lengthen the frame rails. All you have to do is redrill the front holes.

Just a couple comments about your 806. If it is a diesel, the original engine was not the German. They came in the 756, 826, and selected tractors after them. Some choices for power depending on intended use, might be original(I think it was D360, possibly D361), same as 1206 diesel. 1206 came with factory turbo. Some people have installed D414 from 966, 1066, some combines etc. This requires lengthening side frames and a few other changes. Also, popular is putting Cummins diesels them. Link Implement In Ridgeland,Wi has complete conversion to install them.
