What your worst restoration nightmare of all?

Mine is an IH 354 in a million pieces and gotta truck it to Georgia from NY. Were moving and no time to assemble. Got a bunch of money and time in. Can't bare to scrap it. Another $1,000 and assembly, it's done. What to do? It's mostly on shelves in the basement. I got six sheets of 3/4 plywood in the barn. Build boxes? Call the tractor wrecker?

Lee, where in GA are you coming to? The nice thing about the south is that you can work on tractors all winter, even outdoors, without freezing to death. I don't know what my worst restoration nightmare is, but I'm struggling with some Deere unstyled A hubs right now, trying to get the wheel hubs off the driving sleeves. I snapped one of the 7/8" bolts last night. Sometimes these things pop off nicely, while others seem to be welded on.

We will be somewhere in the vicinity of Macon. I'm thinking I'd like to be within 30 minutes of Macon. I'm in need of learning some southern style as I'm a born and raised Yankee honker. Where abouts are you located?

I'm in Lawrenceville, just NE of Atlanta. There's a big tractor show coming up in Carrolton, GA (west of Atlanta) the weekend of April 24-25 if you can make it. Lots of tractors and pulling.

You'll need to phase out the yankee style and start saying "yall" and eat grits every morning. I'm still working on it myself, having relocated from Michigan in 1987.

Just send semi-annual queries. I doubt I will even have a space ready to work on it by fall.
I don't even have a house in GA yet! I do have 8 wood coffin boxes ready to ship this tractor south. Figure I'll also need about 4 large skids.

Mark the outside of the boxes with the words "kitchen utensils" and "lingerie" . Guaranteed to arrive at destination. Good Luck!

One time I found green paint under the red paint on an H I was working on. Really shook me up! Who could do that and live with themselves? I told this story for a laugh, but it is honestly true.

Redid a 1958 Cub once sent the block to machine shop to be bored, really tried to do everything right got it all back together nice paint job and all, started it up----- no oil pressure,pulled the top off of the oil filter base had plenty of oil flow just no pressure after pulling everything back apart found out that the machine shop had taken an allen plug out of the front of the block when they cooked it and never replaced it. Fully restored long frame 37 B JD. Neglected to drain water before winter years ago. Fully overhauled motor is now junk. Do I have to 'splain more?

I painted a John Deere. Spent many hours to put the perfect paint job on it. Bought it in peices and went to put it back together and the sheet metal didn't fit the tractor.

The engine, bell house casting, trans/diff casting, axel house castings hydraulic unit,
steering box, bolster, front end cross member can go on skids. All the parts that go in or on those castings will need to be boxed. I got about eight wood boxes built so far.

payed way too much for a non-running 300 with wide front and power steering. Motor stuck, TA out, head cracked, widefront casting cracked, cracked framerails, cracked front wheel spindles, crappy sheetmetal, cracked radiator mounts, cracked hydraulic lines...I think somebody had a loader on this tractor and cracked it in half! End result? Way too much money in a 300 that I will never see again, but pride in my successful ressurection of a doomed 300- priceless..

Having all the parts to rebuild the engine on my H, and then discovering I have a cracked block and most of the gears in the transmission are destroyed. Luckily I found another H with good tranny for $150... Still had to order a block from a salvage yard too.

Oh shoot, i don't know your circumstance but if you gotta go, you gotta go! I'd say box it up the best you can. sort out the little pieces and box them according to the part of the tractor they go to. the bigger pieces you will be able to figure out. Good luck.
i think my biggest nightmare was trying to mate a 1928 motor and transmission to a 1931 chassis on a mccormick deering 15-30 that came out of South Dakota.
