International M vs Farmall M

Some months back, I posted a question regarding painting my 1951 M, and being a little different at the same time. Nothing against a red tractor, but Guy Fay's book said that International would paint a tractor just about any color the buyer wanted. I was planning on going with an industrial yellow color. When I mentioned that, someone suggested I make the tractor an industrial version of the M, as opposed to the I-6. (I wasn't aware there was such a beast!) Guy Fay's book also implies that International would put whatever decals and badges the customer or the dealer wanted. This industrial idea really stuck with me, but I am unsure how to proceed.

So, here are the questions... * Did the industrial version of the M have the "International" decals on the side, as opposed to the "McCormick Farmall" decals?

* Did it have the "International" plate on the grill, as opposed to the "Farmall" plate?

* Were there any other differences I should know about?

* What is your opinion on the project idea, overall?

* I assume the I-4, I-6 and I-9 folk have this same last question. Where can I get "International" decals and grill plates? I can find "Farmall" everywhere, but "International" seems to be much more rare.

Yes, there were International Ms that International on the front and sides. They show up as wash drawings on literature. Haven't really seen a photo of one. Graders using M skid units for power had International front and side, depending on how the grader manufacturer speced them out.

Thank you all for the information. This industrial M idea seems to be viable, and doesn't seem to insult anyone. I'm feeling much better about the project. My other tractor is a Case industrial tractor (VAIW), so these two should get along well in the barn.

batescorp.com seems to have a good selection of decals. I'll go through the YT web site to check with their advertisers, before I go to batescorp.

I didn't see any "International" grill plates, only "McCormick Deering" and "Farmall." So, I am still outta-luck on that.

I think I can steal the "International" decals from the T-6 Dozer decal set. ($85! Ouch!) That set had the IH logo decal, so I assume the "International" hood decal would be close to correct for a 1951 industrial M. I did not see any trademark or McCormick information on the "International" hood decal. I'll defer to the expert, Mr Fay, as to whether these would be appropriate for 1951.

As I said, I'm feeling much better about this whole idea. Thank you. Any additional guidance on making it correct would be very welcome!! My e-mail address is not hidden.

I have a book,"The Big Book of Framll Tractors" by Robert Pripps,(decent book but not worth what I paid for it) that has an M that was a highway tractor. It has INTERNATIONAL on the hood decals and the front emblem has INTERNATIONAL.The rear hubs look like they cam from a -6 but bigger and bolt to the axle in the same manner.Ill try to get you a pic of it.Give me a few..... .....

Did you notice, brake pedals are on the wrong side on tractor in photo. That wide front not the proper M wide front either.

The negative was simply reversed when the photo was printed. The word "International" was reversed across the front of the tractor.

Dan: I gathered that, just looking at the humerous side of this. It really doesn't matter what you write on the side of it, for all practical purposes an M is an M is an M.

Here ya go, I think what you have there is a model "M" "LLAMRAF" which is what you get when your picture is mirrored. I do agree with you that it is indeed yellow.

Dan, I have seen both Farmall 'H" and "M" in industrial configurations, However, I don't remember them displaying anything other than the Farmall insignia, unlike the "A-I", "B-I", "I-4", "I-6", and "I-9" models which displayed the International insignia. The "H" amd "M" were used for roadgraders, as well as other road construction, industrial, and military applications. Guy Fay's book is right in that IH would paint them any color the customer wanted. Some state, county and cities would have them painted the same as their other equipment, and in some areas, one could tell if the tractor belonged to the city, county, or state, depending in the color. they used yellow, goldenrod, many orange colors, grey, Ma Bell green, and just about any other obnoxious color one could think of. The Military used Olive Drab green, a sand tan, and battle ship grey among other colors. Guy Fay may better answer as to whether the "H" or "M" deviated from the Farmall name. If you wanted to be creative and make a true industrial, the "International" emblem on the "I-4" and "I-6" will replace the Farmall hood emblem on the "H" or "M" respectivly. I'm sure the same goes for the "International" hood decals replacing the Farmall, if you wanted it that way.

The W-4, 6, and 9 I have seen had McCormick Deering badges as opposed to Farmall.

I don't have my book with me, but I believe there was a earlier period when both the letter series and the W-series tractors had "McCormick Deering" on the hood and grill. By 1951, I believe this had been simplified to "McCormick Farmall" and the IH logo added.

As to the I-series and the (mythical?) Industrial version of the M... ??
