Not anything to do with tractors, but I needed to vent a bit.

Just sent my oldest boy off with the 1st Marines for Iraq this evening.

Might not sound like much, but it's the toughest thing I ever had to do in my life.

My brother got back a while ago. From talking to him patience, faith and awareness will go a long way at making his stay a good experience. He probably already knows that though.

John, I know your feeling. I had two sons go over there last February. They are back now and in college. Tell your son we are proud of him. Sounds like his ole man is ok also. The people on this board were very supportive to me and am sure they will be to you, your son, and family. We will be praying for him. Write to him a lot and keep us posted.

I know what you are going through.A little over a year ago(Super Bowl Sunday) I went to Colorado Springs to pick up my four Grandkids,so their mom and dad could go Iraq.The next day I took the two oldest kids,a girl,age 10 and a boy,age 7 to Wichita,Ks. to meet our Daughter-in-laws parents from OK. where they were to stay.On the way down there my grandson asked me if I was going to join the army.He said that he didn't want me to because he didn't think Grandma could watch both of his little sisters if I were to go to Iraq.I told him I would if the army would let me trade places with his mommy,but I didn't think they would.Anyway we made it through the ordeal fine. We had the kids until Sept.,and sometimes through the summer months we had all four,sometimes none,as we did alot of shuffling between Ne. and Ok.Now the kids are home,the grandkids are with them and life goes on.There is alot of talk of whether this war is right or wrong,and I don't know the answer,but my four small grandkids,their parents and your son are all heros of this,that I do know.God Bless ,John

John, I gave Uncle 23 years...3 in Vietnam. My dad was in WWII.
Your son will do fine and we all thank him. People like him are what makes this country great and a safe place to live and raise more children.
He will have an e-mail address. Tell him to write us when he gets near a computer. Us old vets will be glad to write and I have a friend that just came back from there in the reserves.
Keep us posted...ok?

Thanks for your reply. Not sure if he'll be near a computer; he's still sorting that out. SNAFU's rule. But, I will keep you all posted.

He's USMCR too; helicopter (Cobra) mechanic.

We're miltary background too. Grandfather and great Grandfather were Hussars, and my father was Army airborne, and POW at the Bulge in WWII.

John, I have the highest respect for your son, you and your family! Without people like your son, our country would not be what it is today. My Dad served in WW2, unfortunately I am not part of the elite club that served our country, but I do have great respect for those that did!

Thank you to you and your wife, your son, and the rest of your country, for your courageous leadership and dedication. It is a sad time, in my opinon, up here in Canada. We were such a strong nation that would stand with our allies in the past, and help to protect the world and make it a better place. It is not enough to say that we are the occupying force in Afganistan right now. We should be in Iraq along side our friends and neighbors. Thanks Again.

There are many of us that have loved ones over in Iraq. My oldest son is about to return to the States from over there. He was lucky. He just had a four month rotation with the Air Force. With a lot of prayers they will come back to us. I know it was hard on my mother when my older brother shipped out for Viet Nam twice. I was just enough younger that when I joined the Navy that war was just about over. I know that it was hard for her again when her grandson had to go over there. Forunately there are enough people that appreciate the sacrifices that the men and women of the Armed Forces do for us. God Bless America.

John, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your son as he and so many other brave men including my youngest grandson from Maine are deployed to Iraq. I have from the beginning supported this action even though I was not aware until a month ago that my grandsons reserve unit had been called to active duty. I still support our involvement there and can only hope that the efforts of our committment and our brave soldiers who put themselves in harms way, will be successful in creating stability in that area, while keeping terrorists and terrorism on the defensive. Our citizens who deny any legitimate reason for going to war with those who openly declared war against us should hold their heads in shame and go to their nearest war memorial and read the names of their fathers, brothers, uncles, cousins, neighbors and all who fought and in many cases died in former wars to guarantee their right to display their ungratefulness for the opportunity for the good life we have here as opposed to the way most people in the world live. I will continue to pray for the safety and safe return your son and my grandson as well as for every other soldier and pray for those who are less appreciative. GOD SPEED....

Thank you for your son's service to his country. Thanks to him from all of us.

I've got a son in the Army, career soldier, seen him off twice. Doesn't get any easier, but we trust his training and resolve to return.

John, Thank you for being brave for your boy, so he can be brave for the rest of us. God loves soldiers, but he looks after the Marines. Folks here will remember him in their prayers. I served for over 20 years to come back home, your son will too.

Dave, I'm sorry for our thoughtless past, that can't be made up to you. But I'm thanking you now. Please remember that there are many you'll never meet, that have deep respect for your service.

I too had a hard time seeing my son go off into the US Air Force. I now have a 18 yr old grandson that enlisted into the Marines. His 20 yr old brother is fighting a life threatening battle with cancer. Praying to God everyday for all to come out ok.

I hear ya. I remember out processing in Okland, after going thru the process, they gave me cab fare to the airport and enough for a plane ticket and a bus ride home, I'll never forget that feeling walking out of there. I sure was glad to be out of the Army. I remember there was a huge sign there that said "Welcome Home Soldier--America is Proud of You" a guy on the airplane bought me a drink and said thanks...Funny how things were back then. I sure hope this guys kid gets along ok. War is a heck of a thing, I personally don't know if its all worth it.
