I put a picture of this tractor under tractor photos. You can also e-mail me if you know what it is.I am trying to figure out if this is a Farmall Super A or a straight A because The serial number Apperes to be a super A the block has the hyd port for hyds for a super A wich only some Farmall A had. It says that it is yellow from the factory. But it has a weird hyd system on it like I have never seen before can you help me figure out if the is a super A or a regular A or is it something special???

Jon: My first reaction is an Industrial A with a very poor looking blacksmith shop hydraulic add on.

You mention port for hydraulics, I suspect you mean place where pump mounts under distributor. I say distributor, it may be mag my screen not making it clear enough. On a Super A also between battery and bell of clutch housing the torque tube is flat on top for mounting the touch control unit. The A is round on top of torque tube. Go to the casting code advice you were given by one of the earlier posters. That will sort it out for you.

Another item on this subject for all, is 50+ years later not all Super A's have touch control anymore. I was at a show two years ago and a guy had a Super A with hydraulic resovoir and dual hydraulic valves from a Farmall 230 mountd in place of the touch control and of course the original pump will work. I'm not sure whether plumbing from pump to valves is same as for touch control or not. He had a very nice looking tractor and with two remote hydraulic valves. I have also seen others where they just disbanded the touch control unit, added a resovoir, bypass, filter, valves, etc. from any hydraulic shop and used the same pump that powered the touch control. Many of the latter looked as shoddy as your hydraulic system.

Looks to me to be a Industrial A, based on the extra support from the front bolster to the torque tube. If it has the place for the hydro pump on the engine block, it looks from the photo to be covered with a plate. The hydro unit on it looks to be home made. How is it the pump powered? Also, could have been produced late in the run, and received the newer style engine with the casting for the hydro pump, (Or were engine's like these an option even on a Straight A or Straight Industrial A?) OR could have gotten a new engine sometime in it's lifetime. A Check casting codes, as suggested below, will unravel this mystery. Compare #'s on the torque tube vs. the engine block.

You can find casting dates on the block and torque tube. The date ends in a letter for the year, R for 1948, S for 1949, etc., but W for 1951 because (according to Guy Fay's book) V was not used.

It looks like a straight A to me. There is not a hydraulic unit under the gas tank. My tractor data book is at work but if I remember right the Super A has a prefix on the serial number of FAA. The serial number tag is on the left seat bracket. I may be wrong on this and I am sure that others will jump in here to assist you. The Super A is going to have the Touch-control unit, rockshafts, and control levers which I don't see on this. The Super A will also have a water pump. Some A's have water pumps but those were an add on.

I would say it is an Industrial A. Also, the Super A didn't have a water pump either except for maybe the 54 Super A1. Not even real sure about then.
