I paid about $120 to have the cam and lifters in my H reground. It only took a week.

if you know for certain that it was rust, and you didn't get aggressive enough to change the shape of the lobe with your emery cloth, and there are only small round pits, then you could just go ahead and use it. The little pits will actually hold a little oil on the cam. If it is the lines that form on the lobe in a crazed pattern then the lobe is starting to flake off and will need to be reground or replaced.

Had a Cockshutt 40 with the same problem. Actually the replacement cam had the pit, original had a lobe wore off.

Took it to a machine shop and they were able to clean it up no problem.

Need to find a fairly complete shop to find one with a cam grinder but they shouldn't be to far out of line on $$.

JB weld can do a lot but JB weld a cam, no can do. No pics so can't really say but have it looked at by an automotive shop. Really small pits, not too many, may not be a major deal.
Lots of rust, forget it. You probably know already. If you are looking to JB weld it, it's probably not good. You might be able to find a good used cam. If you find a used cam see if you can get the lifters, in order, as they were removed or get new lifters. Don't mix up lifters on a cam. Don't run old lifters on a new cam. Best bet, a re-grind cam and new lifters.

I bought a 400 Which I still have. After I had it a while ,two to four years, I found that the gear to shaft key had been built up with something like J B weld. I don't know how long it lasted but it held for a while.

I don't thinl JB would last to long under that sort of stress. It's also a lot of work to not go ahead and fix it right because you know you will have to do it again.

Digger, your local auto supply shop will have a machine shop or connections to a shop that can built up a cam and re grind it to specs. In our shop we have a supplier , Ideal Supply, whose machine shop does this kind of work for us and they guarantee the job is as good or better than original because of the tempering process. I personaly would not put a motor back together with JB weld as the source of the fix...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

If you can't find a good used one, you should be able to have your cam built up and re-ground to specs. I've had good luck having this done on car engines before. Good luck. Larry

I can't imagine that JB Weld is going to be near as hard as the metal in the cam shaft. You are looking at a lot of wear on this. I would think that you would be a lot further ahead to get one out of a parts tractor or even look of a new one (if they still make them).
