Does anybody know how to make a TA eliminator?

I'm looking for some ideas on how to make a TA eliminator. I work in a machine shop so any machining would be easy to do. I'm just wondering if anybody else has already done this. I looked at Bates Corp website and their setup looks like a ta without the rollers. Is there an easier way, maybe just a shaft and some couplers? I don't care about resale because I'm never going to sell it. Thanks!

Why do you want to eliminate the TA? If you have access to a machine shop, you can easily overhaul yours..

I want to get rid of the TA because the TA pressure plate is broke also. I need to split the tractor so that I can shift properly and I figure since i'm in there, I might as well take care of the non functioning TA that I have. I don't have a lot of money to stick into it, so buying a rebuilt TA is out of the question. That is the reason that I was going to try and make something that I could just replace it with. I suppose I guy could just leave it there because it does work on the low side, but I would just like to get rid of it all together so I never have anymore problems. I'm also interested in learning how to fix it in a cheap manner though, could you please explain. Thanks for your help!

The I&T shop manuals outline the procedure pretty well. I don't remember it exactly off hand, but it involves cleaning up(turning) the ramp cylinder/shaft (ID or OD?) and replacing the old ramp rollers(new oversize diameter) and springs. That was on the 300 series farmalls. I'm not sure how you could rebuild into the newer "sprage type" T/A, which is supposed to be better. I had a local machinist rebuild mine couple of years ago for $175, but the parts were cheap- less than $20. I guess you'll just have to open it up and see how bad the damage is.

Bryan, I asssumed that your ramp and roller were shot. Don't know if my solution posted below will work with a busted pressure plate.

I don't think that is a part that is prone to failure. You should be able to find one for a reasonable price. Get quotes from half a dozen salvage yards.

358 877 R1 is the shaft and 358 878 R1 is the coupling. The shaft has splines on both ends. It has a pilot on one end. The coupling has internal splines.

I have a lathe, bridgeport, broaching head, and indexing heads but I would never go to the trouble of making these parts.

If I wanted the parts, I would start by emailing salvage yards. This site probably has a list, but in any case, you should be able to find a list.

The easiest solution is to weld the three planetary gears to their frame while still installed in the tractor. Remove the TA handle and associated external parts. I have a 660 set up this way. You could be TA-less in about an hour.

Thanks Wardner, but i've got another question for you. the numbers you listed, are those IH part numbers? I like the weld idea but will the weld hold up under heavy torque and daily usage? thanks again for your great response! Take care

The part numbers came out of a 400-450 parts book.

Even six lousy little welds should hold up. That would be two small welds on each gear. Just remove the tin cover over the TA and you will see where to start welding.
