cold diesel fuel?

Started my 484 this morning and let it stand for about 5 mins running at about 1100rpm. When I came back to it the engine was down on power and the revs where surging up and down but it never quit.
I thought it was possibly because the tap on one half of the [saddle] fuel tank was shut, but there was plenty in the other half anyway. I opened the other tap anyway but it didn't seem to make any difference.
About 3 or 4 mins later it suddenly cleared up and has been normal ever since.
The temp here in the UK got down to a meagre -4C last night - could that have been the cause? My fuel is not treated in any way.

Draw a little diesel into a small glass. it should be water white. if cloudy or has small white specs it may have been mixed with heating oil. Cloud point on US desiel should be -20 degrees F. Sometimes heating oils are not so.

Clanger it sounds like moisture in the fuel and a little fuel de-icer is the answer. Where I am -4C is warm, we've had -27C this winter and my diesels always start. It would take very cold conditions for diesel to gel but water will "gel " at 0*C so that's what I'd put my money on....good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

Just a thought. You might want to check the ratio of water to anti freeze in your rad as well.

likely a little water turned to ice. i would change the filters. #2 diesel should be ok down to about zero fahrenheit

Seems reasonable. Seems like gelling fuel over combustion weak as the latter would have been worse from the start and gotten better...right!

Thanks guys, I'll keep an eye on it and change the filters...they're about due for a change anyway.

Hi Clanger, surging certianly sounds like something is restricting fuel flow to the injector pump. Living in a cold climate we have lots of experience with Diesel fuel turning to jello. I don't think this is your problems as once the 484 is running the warm fuel from the injector return line will keep the fuel from turning to jello. I suspect the same as someone else suggest as ice in the top of the fuel filter.
For some reason the miosture from the fuel tank will flow until it hits the first fuel filter and then it will freeze right on top of the filter restricting the fuel flow. Eventually if the tractor continues to run the warm fuel from the return line will melt the ice and the water can be drianed out of the drain cock on the fuel filter.
Don,t like using alcohol based gas line antifreeze as it is not friendly to seals in the injector pump. Prefer using a little GM ATF fluid in a tank of Diesel fuel. It has a water absorbing property.
Another thought, when you did the engine overhaul, did you have the Stop/Run control rod off the injector pump? If you did make sure when the level is in the RUN position that the lever on the pump is completely against the adjusting screw stop on the pump.

Hope it warms up soon
JB

Hi JB. Both the fuel filters where replaced in April 2003 when i bought the 484, and although it doesn't do a lot of work i think it's time to replace #1 filter anyway.
I didn't touch the injection pump.....I'm not that stupid!!
We had a bit more snow here last night so it's pretty chilly, but no problems when i started her up this morning, so maybe it wasn't cold enough.
