Got the $300 450 running and down to the shop today, noticed a problem with the tranny. Its hard to pull out of gear if its sitting on a hill or tractor is in a bind. Any ideas on what might be the problem, is it clutch adjustment or something in the tranny??? all ideas welcome and thank you for your ideas/help

Old, try this link to the Red Power forum:

This very topic was discussed and SteveOH gave a very detailed method of adjusting the linkages.

It is the adjustment and it is critical. The problem with these tractors is that after years of use the linkage points all wear some. If your engine clutch release bearing shaft is worn much and you adjust to the specs you can still have a problem because some of the pedal movement is used up pushing the shaft to the far side of the hole. Keep this in mind and you may be able to get it to work by cheating on your freeplay on the pedal. I usually fix the problem by drilling another hole in the clutch pedal just above the existing hole which gives me more movement on the linkage. Hope this helps.

Old , i hate to say this cause i might get a tongue lashing by everyone else who's replied - but my experience with the farmall TA's (and i've had LOTS) says there is absolutly nothing wrong with your TA/clutch adjustment - that's just the way they'r made , if your going up a hill & put in the clutch -the only way you'll get it out of gear is to either pull it out of gear before you stop moveing --or pull the TA back (this will release the "binding") ..... ..a good , properly adjusted TA will not "roll" backwards when it's in high range

A year ago I would have agreed with you Dave. Mine was like that for 20 years.

One day while talking to an OLD IH mech. He told me how to adj. the linkage. I did as he explained. It shifts anytime, anywhere, rolls backwards with the TA ahead. IT'S THE ADJ. that is critical and is touchy. Seif.

My computer has been down so only know what I read on this post. I had a 400D for a few years we did a lot of work with it. $300 sounds like a steal to me. I got a new truck at work tuesday night it has twin air horns I will try that some night LOL.

Old: Very likely your clutch and TA adjustment, then with that tractor parked all those years with no oil up around the top shaft and shifting rails, you probably have a bit of rust up there. I would first check the clutch and TA adjustments, if they are right you have some driving to do. Drive it and shift gears quite often. start off by going from 2nd to 3rd to 4th, those are the easy ones. You get some oil worked in up in the top side of the transmission, it should come without going into transmission.

Well maybe the 15 miles we drove it today may help it a lot more then I thought it would, I guess I'll find out tomorrow. I get to rewire it tomorrow, I'm just going to rip all the old wire off and start over. Thanks

If it has a TA the TA clutch is probably out of adjustment. These must be readjusted periodically, its not just a one time thing. It needs to be by the book.

I'll have to look that up in my book, I know that the T.A. seems to work ok but that may still be where the problem is. Thanks

Get a manual and adjust the clutch and TA linkage TO THE LETTER! These have to be perfect to work properly. Next time it hangs in gear, pull the TA lever back and I bet it will shift...

Guess I'll have to look that up in my manual and see if it help to adjust the clutches and I'll also try what you said about shafting and see if it works. Thanks for the info. I guess for $300 I should plan on playing with it some

Old, I was using a tractor that had clutch problems and there were two things that were syptomatic, one the gears always ground a little when you shifted into gear and two, the shifter lever never allowed the gears to disengage and you had to pull hard to pull it out of gear. I'm guessing that if your tractor has been sitting for some time a few good runs may help then I would check the finger adjustments , then the actual clutch adjustment, but from what you said I'm guessing clutch . The shifter could be rusted inside or the pins on which the gears slide but that is less likely than clutch....good luck, from Mike in Exeter Ontario
