Some old Red Power Jockey told me that Fenders saved his life on a few occasions. He said it gives you a place to launch from when the tractor is going over.

Any takers or was he joshing me?

Scott

Every little bit helps. You might be quick enough to get a foot on the fender to make yourself out jump gravity. Nervous energy is good energy.

There is no time to launch. I turned a JD backward in 1974. It takes only 1/4 revolution of the rear wheel to reach the point of no return. Some say that 75% of tractor turnovers are fatal, sounds reasonable to me. Sorry, I just don't buy the launch story.

He" "launching" hot air mixed with something else! Fenders aren't going to help you in a rollover and he knows it. By the time he decides how and where he wants to launch himself, it's too late. Being safe is more important than fenders. And I can see times when fenders could be a detriment.
How many thousands of hours have people spent on letter series tractors, red and green, and lack of fenders have never been an issue?

Scott I agree and I have my Dad's M and two H's, all have fenders and if they didn't they would get some at the first opportunity. I don't like tractor wheels turning past me 16" from where I am sitting, I can't believe anyone with a letter series doesn't have fenders and I know there are a pile of them that don't. I'm not being critical of anyone , its just that for my preference fenders shield me from not only mud or water but give me something solid between the wheel and me!....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Michael,Michael, I agreed with what you said here (I usually agree with you as a matter of fact)until you said fenders protect you from mud and water. On a letter series Farmall? Those straight up short things? Naah. The protection afforded from the spinning wheel yes but it wasn't until clam shell on numbered series or flat top did the driver get any protection from mud and water from the rear wheels. Dang, I was hoping fenders would keep some of the dirt off me when disking.

The first thing I did when I bought my "H" was to install fenders, knowing that I might be having some grandchildren riding along.

little john: I sure hope that you rethink letting your grandchildren ride on the tractor with you. There are so many sad stories about a youngster slipping out of their grandfather's grasp and being killed when the tractor ran over them.

Back in the good old dangerous days when I was growing up, I would crawl on and ride on the side of the loader when dad was driving the H. Spent many hours as a kid, riding on other tractor fenders. Local farm kid years ago was killed. He was riding in a cab, they hit a rough spot, he leaned against door, the latch popped loose and door open right up with the kid leaning on it, kid fell out and got run over. Accidents can happen at any time, with anything. As a grown adult, the only way I would let somebody ride as a passenger on the H, is standing behind me on the draw bar (not pulling anything behind) or perhaps a small kid setting in my lap. Just not room on that plateform of the H or M for a second person.

So they can fall of the fenders? Old tractors were not made for passengers.

A local boy, age 5, had his skull crushed when he was riding a piece of farm equipment
with his dad. He fell foreward and that was it.

As much fun as it may be, please keep the
little ones off these machines. In a cab
of a tractor or combine is another story,
but if you love them..... ...
..... ..... ..... ..don't take the chance.

God bless the children.

I have an M that is equipped with fenders. It's nice to something between you and the tire when you are on the tractor. I think using them to launch yourself in case of a rollover is nearly impossible.

Sounds like he rolled a tractor more than once. If he rolled a tractor more than once, doesn't sound like to me he was concerned about safety in the begining. If he cared less about safety enough to roll a tractor, what the he?? would he care wether it had fenders on it or not. I don't know if he was kidding you or not, but if not the guy is clearly retarded. Fenders add some safety, but minimal. Probably added more safety to those letter series that had steel wheel's. They would bring stuff up and over the top with the wheel if you run over it. Like sheets of tin, wire mesh fencing, cut brush, excetra. They would also be way worse to catch loose clothing and so on if given the oportunity. Fenders would give you a little extra safety there. Haven't really been around to many letter series fenders myself but have seen a few. Doesn't look like much of a fender to me (they look small).

Well say what you like, but I have shied away from letter series tractors with no fenders. Seeing that "anything I can grab" rotating right next to me gives me the hebbiejibbies.

he was joshing you. It is far better to keep them rightside up. more people have been killed trying to jump than those who rode it out.
