Farmallkid: Now you are getting into stories out of small Ag College's. I attended such a college at Truro, Nova Scotia, in the early 60s. Because of budgets and size our college and a nearby teachers college didn't take part in big college, intercollegate sports, but rather a local league, 6 teams in all for most sports. Town of Truro had a team, mostly recent high school grads working around town at variour jobs, we called these guys the townies. Down to the chanpionship finals and Ag College against Townies. We had noticed earlier in series refereeing was not quite as fair as it might be. So an effort was made to get every student out cheering for the big game. During what we considered a bad call by the ref, from out of the stands came a chicken onto the gym floor. Referee stopped the game. You just can't play basketball with a chicken running around the floor. We watched as the referees tried to roll basketballs at the chicken to herd him off the court. Of course you know what the chicken did everytime a ball came rolling at him. They called in the town engineer, janitor, and others. Everyone was afraid to catch the chicken. Our guys just retired to the side lines. I looked over at one point and our college principal a very senior genetics professor, was almost bursting a gut laughing. Finally the referee went to our bench, to see if the guys would remove the chicken. Coach gave him Ted, a 6'5" potato picker from northern NB. They claim everyone else picked potatoes in baskets in those days. Ted just rolled the barrel along the field and picked directly in barrel. Ted had a lenghty discussion with referees, romoved the chicken and the game went on. Refereeing improved also. The next day the principal made his rounds and caught up with every class, giving 2-3 min. lecture re. behaviour at sporting events. He did have trouble keeping a straight face. Seems animal rights activists were on his case, even way back then as to how a chicken got off campus. We did win the series.
