300 utility engine

Gentlemen,I have finally got around to cleaning the grease and grime from a 300u that I have. I found a C-175 stamp on the engine. This tractor has a 300U serial tag, serial # 21135.I thought all 300u's had C-169 engines in them. Any one else found a C-175 in a 300U? How ya doing Hugh?

What does the fuel pump block off plate indicate; why is it there,etc.? Worked on a 300U a few months ago that had this plate, the cast engine size was ground off & a number stamped in it's place.Best I can remember ther was no ser.# on pad where it should be. According to date code(can't remember exact code)it was a 40's model. Can anyone explain?

Gentlemen, thanks for all the ideas and info.JB's post may have shed some light on the subject. My uncle worked for IH 30 some years, and if any demonstraters, or any deals were to be had, he would have been in on it.This 300 I now have may have been a demo, may have had engine trouble and was returned to dealer, or who knows what.I am fairly certain that it came into Grandpa's possesion with a C-175 engine,I think Dad would remember if the engines were swapped.Again, there are many questions about this tractor that I will never have an answer to, guess I was just wondering if any of you guys had seen a C-175 in a 300U. Doyle: I wish you had come back with this one more time and given us the casting codes of other castings on the tractor. In dropping this you kind of took the wind out of our challenge. Contrary to the thinking that you were taking to much of our time, time is what most of we older guys have an abundance of. So you kind of left us much like a bride left standing at the altar.

Hi everyone, I believe the 300U that we bought in fall of 1958 had a C175 engine also. This tractor had being used as a demo and snow plow tractor by the dealer for about a year and had about 50 hrs on it. In the spring of 59 the neighbour bought a 350U. One day when the IH mechanic was at our farm working on our famous No.15 harvester, my Dad asked him what was the difference between a 300U and a 350U, he replied a bigger engine then he looked at our 300U engine and then he said but yours has the bigger engine.

Was he making my Dad feel better? I don't know.

Or did IH start substituting the C175 engines in the last of the 300U production?

Some things to check ,if block was replaced by
or from IH dealer.Fuel pump opening with cover plate and 2 bolts holding it on (under carb.) Engine block has no serial # stamped. Date code on
engine block later than rest of tractor.These things are not always 100% right but are found
frequently when block was replaced. Could you tell us what the date code on engine block is?

A question I should have ask the first time.When you said C175 was stamped on block.Is it realy stamped in or is it raised cast letters? Have seen casting # of size, and block # ground off and stamped in before after engine change.

According to your info the block was cast the last month of 1957 by then 350's would have been in production a little over a year. What has me curious is the engine serial number. Never saw a C-175 with that high of a serial number in a tractor. According to one source I have looked at, the tractor engine serial numbers never passed 30,500. I think I'm creating more questions than answers. Did you check to see if it had a fuel pump blockoff plate on left side of block?

Dave: I have read all posts in this thread. My next question, looking at Doyle's responce to me, indicating the tractor was bought new by his grandfather in 57 or 58. Could this tractor actually be a later 1958 mobel 350? I guess the next item is ask Doyle what are the casting codes on the rest of the tractor. I know this doesn't help solve your question on the high serial number for a C-175 engine.

Doyle: I think if I remember correctly your dad bought that tractor new, am I right or wrong? Is there a chance your dad may have switched that engine without your knowledge? Your serial number 21135 is 1956 and is final year of 300U production, however it is a very early 56 model. I don't know the actual production figures as YT only gives us the beginning figure for each year. However if you look at those figures for both 300U and the 350U, it would be safe to assume 10,000+ 300U were built after yours. Thus it is not a case of a factory engine switch near end of production.

Hugh,This was my Granfathers tractor.Dad thinks that It was bought around '57 or '58 with a minimum amount of hours on it. He is certain that no engine work was done since that time.And I can vouch for that from about 1965 on. There are other questions about this tractor,namely why was the fast hitch cylinder hoses hooked up backwards, that I will never know the answer to. Guess this engine question will remain unanswered also, as the ones who would know have passed on. Thanks for the reply Hugh. D Sellers

Doyle: Just reading Dave's post, followed by yours. That info will crack this for you as C code in the date, will establish casting date on block. I'm just not sure which year C is. It is either 55, 56, 57 or 58. I am sure Dave knows.

The 300U has a C-169 and the 350U has the C-175 engine. Sounds like someone did an engine change on that tractor. The bigger engine was one of the changes to make the 350's. HTH

I'm doing great the 300 row crops had the 169 motor. I'm going to say that most all 300 utility had the 175 motor havent see one that didnt. they are more set up for loaders and other tasks in an industry.

The 300U came with a C169 engine, just like the 300 rowcrop. The 350U and 350 rowcrop came with a C175 engine. However, the blocks in the utility and rowcrop engines have different part numbers, probably reflecting the different ways they mount in the tractor.

I suppose it's possible some of the late 300U tractors ended up with a C175 engine as shipped from the factory. The parts manual is remarkably unclear regarding the switch to the larger bored engine.

My list says a 300U having a serial number from 501 to 20218 was built sometime during 1955.
Serial number 20219 and up was built sometime in 1956.
A 350U having a serial number from 501 to 1962 was built sometime in 1956. Serial numbers from 1963 to 15048 was built in 1957. Serial number 15049 and up was built sometime in 1958.
