Which front end set up do you like, the single wheel or the double?
...
Nothing personal, but I must admit
that the single front wheel drives
me nuts. It doesn't look good and
it doesn't make sense?

Which do you prefer?

I just wanted to thank everyone for their
comments. You gave a lot of interesting points, things that I hadn't thought of.

I guess I prefer the double wheels in the
front. I think they look better and if one
goes down, you have the other to limp on
back to the shed. Better safe than sorry.
Use wise, either would work for me.

John, I know that single wheel fronts have their rightful applications, and not too far from us they had quite a few of them in the potato fields, but when my Dad was in the process of buying a new Farmall MD, he was toying with the idea of putting a single front end on it. I told him that that would make it the ugliest tractor in the township and that if it came in the yard with a single front, than He'sd have to drive it, because I wouldnt be caught dead driving anything that ugly regardess of any advantage. Besides, going to school and explaining away an ugly tractor wasnt going to cut it with my friends. Thankfully it came with a narrow front end. I still think single fronts are ugly, but it is only an opinion. I'm sure that if 90% of the tractors in our area were single fronts, then I would have thought them to be beautiful. So much for independent thought, eh?

They steer a lot easier AND don't "wobble" when in road gear on the highway! Besides, you have 1 less tire to buy and keep aired up.

As vegatable plants grow and spread out, the single front wheel will not damage as many of the plants that the duel front wheels would, the single fronts are mostly vegtable tractors. I would like to have one to cultivate with.

Danny: All of the V models (AV, HV, MV and their super models) came with WIDE front ends.

For looks, I prefer the double wheel setup. The single wheel would be great on a small tractor that you use to mow with. Seems it wouldn't cut the turf when you turned sharp. Less compaction too.

Oooo! An opinion question! I love opinion questions.

I've always thought the single front looked odd. The picture that always comes to mind when thinking of tractors was the dual wheel in a V. That's just looks, though. When thinking of function, I always thought the wide front end was more stable. Again, that's just an opinion, based on past posts. Although my Case VAIW has a WFE, I've never yet had the priviledge of driving it.

I like the double, but to be real honest with ya, I haven't really been around a single front. I guess they are more appropriate for certain use. Tractor pullers seem to want to have them.

The single front wheel weighs less than the double unit, that's why the tractor pullers want them. Personally, I like the double set-up, probably because that is what I am used to looking at. If I had grown up being around tractors with single fronts, that is most likely what I would prefer.

Tree nursery next to me have a couple Hs, one with a Jiffy Baller on it for digging small shrubs and the other just a regular old H for pulling wagons. Both have single fronts, known locally as "mud rudders". Both had duals originally, but in early spring digging conditions, they often plugged with mud between the tires and made the tractors a pain to steer.

I bought a single front because: (1) I didn't have one, and (2) had never been around one. In SW Iowa many farmers on river bottom land put them on under mounted corn pickers to lessen mudballing from dual fronts, but they put the twos back on for tillage. Single fronts (especially cast iron ones) are: (1)heavy and awkward to handle, (2) easier to steer, (3) sinkers in soft ground, (4) UGLY! I even tried to paint a silver rim around the wheel to break up the solid red/boring look. My nickel. Dick Davis
