A little while ago there was a heated discussion about storing inside vs. outside. I believe in inside. I was wondering if anybody ever used one of those portable structures. I have seen them at fairs, car ports etc. but never talked to the person who was actually using it. Just an idea.

Lot's of good advice already posted. But one more thing. If you use one of these, buy a tarp and put it on the ground, and park your vehicles on the tarp. These buildings are typically erected where drainage is not considered (like right on a yard). Condensation from the ground is a huge problem with these structures. I had a neighbor who bought a metal building, and because of a health problem, couldn't erect it, so he stored it inside one of these temp structures. I think it would have been better out in the air. The moisture collected, and rusted fast.

This phenom is not that unusual. An old neighbor build a machine storage shed, without good drainage, and it would rust farm equipment fast. Best thing is put it somewhere good and dry, and lay a tartp on the bottom.

Good Luck
Steve

If you live where the neighbors dont squawk, or have no neighbors, consider using box trailers. I got 4 out behind my barn. Bought them cheap from trucking outfits that could no longer trust them on the road. Dug an inclined hole and backed them down the ramp and used the dirt to make a ramp. I use them for tractors, antique cars, etc.

When we lived in town I used one of the Kmart ones I picked up for $150 to keep my boat under.
Beats throwing a tarp on it.
Figure it to last about 2 years. In that time wind, Sun, Hail ect will pretty much wear them out.

I had a metal arched type of carport, it was about 14' high in the center and both sides were enclosed all the way down, it was fine while it lasted but last summer it was ripped out of the ground by very high winds and was destroyed.
I've yet to replace it and really miss it. But I'll probably replace it with a regular metal building if I ever get rich enough.

I may have misunderstood. Mine is like a metal car port. Not the ones like a canvas tent.

John; friend of mine has two of these units. He stores three in one and two in the other. They work great for him. There are at least three draw backs with them however. One is snow, you will need to clean it off offten ( it is not hard to do just push up from the inside) Two is the wind (he has no wind to speak of in his locacetio, a lot of trees) and Three it the exshuast on the IHs are high and will burn a hole in it if you run them for any time at all (short of starting them and driving out rite away)JDs have a shorter stack and that has not been an issue for them. Hope this helps BUDD

I have three tractors and a four wheeler under one. We live on a city lot and I have no space at all to do a building. They keep the sun and rain off of them but not as good as an enclosed building. My father in law said I could build a building on his farm but it's 60 miles away and he does not live there so I'm my stuff would walk away pretty quickly.
