Being new to all of this, I purchased a 1952 Super M a couple of months ago to do a little work in the fields. Any suggestions on what kind of a small plow to get to turn over the soil? I know nothing of plows so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Since your key phrase is "do a little work" in the fields, you have no reason to work your tractor for all it is worth. I would settle for 3-14s or 3-16s if I were you. If you are plowing under 20 acres, it wouldn't even hurt to pull 2-16s. Perhaps a waste of available power, but for a small job, just buy what is available and inexpensive.

Soil type makes a HUGE difference on what it will pull. Having a plow that's clean, sharp, and adjusted correctly also makes a big difference. Here in central IN, a Super M was usually found with a 4-14 plow, or a 3-16. We pulled a Moline 4-14 trailing plow anywhere in 2nd, and lots of places in 3rd.

I grew up on a Super M and we pulled 3-16" in heavy soil in north centeral Indiana In third gear. it had plenty of power and i always thought it could have pulled 4-14".

Bob, M and superM were considered "three furrow tractors" and that's where you should begin, looking for a good pull behind drag plow. From time to time I come across one at an auction sale but they are becoming more and more scarce. Case I-H can still come up with coulters and such, (I am assuming you want an I-H plow), having said that any 3 furrow plow will work for you on that tractor. Have fun, Mike in Exeter Ontario

They made and you can still find 1, 2 &3 bottom trail plows. They are either hydraulic lift or mechanical lift. Although the SM was rated for a 3 bottom plow, it depends on the moldboard size. Plows come in several board sizes, 12 inch, 14 inch , 16in and even 18 inch. It would hurry a SM to pull a 3 bottom 16 inch plow in Pa. sod where we live. If you only need to plow a little, I would get a set of 16 inch 2 bottoms. Also be careful of the age of the plow because the cost of points etc. is pricy and you will break them. Stick to the newer versions with the throw away point that cost about $20 each.

I think your over rating this tractor. The perfect plow would be 2-18. The 18" bottoms will give you more clearance when plowing ground with a lot of straw or corn stalks. You could go with the 3-16 but I/d like to have a little extra left in the tractor for a tough spot in the field.

I guess, If you add enough weight to the rear tires you could pull a 4 bottom in first gear but you would really tear up the transmission over time.
