Super MTA Electrical Question

I have a few questions on our Super MTA. First off I have to admit, I spend most of my time over on the green and yellow side of the website, so my knowledge of the red ones is kind of limited. This tractor has been converted to 12 Volts so it has a negative ground and an alternator. The problem is that the tractor starts just fine with the on-off button pulled out, but will not shut down with the button pushed in (even with the throttle shut clear down). I have been told that either there is some voltage leaking back through the switch or the switch itself is bad. I guess I'm looking for any ideas or guidance you folks may be able to give me on this problem. I'd also like to find a wiring diagram for this set-up if any of you know where to find one on the web. The harness on this tractor has been spliced into several times in the past and I'm not sure what I'm actually tracing when I look at it. I may have to start from scratch to rewire as I'd also like to reconnect the lights. I apologize that this post is kind of long and rambling and appreciate any assistance.
Thanks
Bob F

Bob - Punch below for a wiring diagram for your setup.

Reason your SMTA runs on is whoever wired it up probably omitted the warning light in the alternator #1 terminal circuit. (The lamp not is there not only to warn when the alternator quits, it also limits backflow current from the alternator to the ignition coil when you open the ignition switch).

If you don't want a warning light, you can substitute a 10 to 40 ohm, 1 watt resistor. Or install a 1N4004 diode in place of the lamp (wire the diode so the banded end connects to the alternator #1 terminal)

Hope this helps...

if you have a gm 10si alternator, the power to the coil is being supplied thru the white wire at the alternator connector.there are wiring diagrams shown in the archives here which show a diode or idiot light installed in the circuit to eliminate this problem.you can also install a automotive key type ign switch, hook coil wire to ign post and alternator wire to accessory side.
