just got a 140 tonight, any tips on problem areas

I Have 3 MFs, 2 fords, 1 Kubota & now a 140 int.
Is there anything I need to look for ? Seems to
run ok and hydraulics all work. I plan on changing
the 1 point hitch to a standard 3 pt and use it to
bushog with sense it seems run stronger than my old 8N. Dont know much about Int/farmall so any tips or
hints on the 140 would be a big help.

Great tractor, will roll over in a second if not driven right, be careful. Agree with Haas, dump the 3 point idea, bush hog with another tractor with 3 point hitch.

What do you mean roll over in a minute if not driven right, that could be said of any tractor. I have owned 6 offset Farmalls (3- Super A, 2- 130 and a 140) since 1958. Those tractors are just as stable as any other, unless some unknowing person has installed the wheels wrong. Example putting the heavy wheel on the left side. Yes these tractors are probably a bit unstable at minamum wheel tread, but so are a Super H, 300, 450, 560, 656 or a 1066. I think I would take my chances on a 140 at 44" wheel tread, probably a whole lot safer than a 560 at 56' tread.

Thanks for the replies, I hope Hugh is right and
I dont have to worry about it turning over. I still plan on using it to bushog or put a belly
mower on.

Chuckinnc: I agree with Haas on the problem of offset and pto use either with 3 point or 1 point hitch. Haas has suggested the 1 point will be better, probably should have said marginally better. The only jobs I ever use my pto for are stationary items like standby generator, etc., also items like spray pumps mounted direct to pto shaft or belly mount mowers, either sickle or finish mowers.

I also have a fabricated standard swinging drawbar, I can install without removing lower portion of fast hitch and can use that for trailer pto work. My 130 has spread thousands of loads of manure with this drawbar, and pto spreader.

These tractors were designed with one thing in mind, mid mount attachments being just about anything that will fit under the tractor, and rear mount planters, plows, disks and cultivators. They do those jobs exceptionally well. These tractors came from an era were farmers wanted a specific tractor for specific jobs. Time has also changed a lot of those specific needs.

Chuckinnc: I keep my tractors all set at 52" minamum center to center wheel tread. I have currently a Super A, 130 and 140, and 52" is minamum I feel safe with. I would set them wider but it causes them to use up shop floor space. Since I'm rarely anywhere but in my yard or garden and ground is level, suits me. Years ago on the dairy farm I ran the 130 at 60" wheel tread. I never considered any tractor safe set on minamum wheel tread. I operated tractors like 300, 560, 504 and 656 at 72" wheel tread. I even liked those big ones with duals, made them 10' wide and they would slide sideways down hill before they will roll. My late dad and I have combined 50 years of no lost time accidents to back this up.

Remember when you set wheel tread on a offset Farmall, keep the cast wheel on the right side, and center of tractor is point where front axle pivots, not pto shaft.

The hitch parts of the 3 point implement may interfer with the PTO shaft, since the PTO is offset. To use a bush hog you will need an overrunning clutch. Since you've been using the bush hog on a Ford 8N, you likely know that already. The three point conversions on the 140 don't work real well in my view, just well enough to be functional. I'd suggest that you convert your bush hog to the 1 point hitch rather than putting the 3 point on the tractor. Lifting capacity of the 140 is limited, but will be helped, if your tractor has the helper spring that is usual with the one point hitch. Also the 3 point on the 140 uses a short top link, that limits the lift range and the geometry somewhat. The 140 is a good little tractor and should give you good service and I would agree, that it is probably nearly as strong as a Ford 8N.
