Hi Guys,

I did it again; I went for the cheap seats and got bit.

I bought an old H (with a double set of wheel weights), a wide front end, and a loader to move snow here in the winter....so far, so good.

Then, like an idiot, I go and buy a set of single link tire chains.

You guessed it; my little $103 dollar snowblower/lawn tractor ran circles around the H after this last snow. The chains keep dropping in between the lugs of the tire.

What is the best "style" of tractor chain to buy?

The tractor and loader work fine; I just can't get any traction.

Run your chains loose that way they won't get hid in the tire lugs.

Hi All,

Well, here's an update!

I went into town yesterday to get some of those connector links to tie the cross-chains together. They wanted $1.50 a pop for the silly things; I did some quick math and figured this was going to come to quite a bit of money by the time I got all done.

Anyway, later in the day I was looking thru the local "swap shop" and a feller up the road was looking for a set of these chains to fit his M. Called him up and sold 'em.

Now, I'm going to order a set of the ready made "X'd" chains today. Hope this does the trick.

Allan - I encountered similar problems when I replaced badly worn rear tires on my SM with new ones. When I put on the tire chains, the cross chains would drop between the deep tread lugs on the new tires. This made the chains pretty much ineffective.

Solution was to buy a bunch of repair links the same size as the cross chains. Used a pair of repair links to connect each adjacent pair of cross chains in the middle. Now instead of a the cross chains forming a parallel or "ladder" pattern across the tire, each pair of cross chains makes a kind of an "X". This makes the cross chains ride on top of the tire lugs.

The chains now ride rougher on a hard surface (packed snow/ice), but they also now grip like they should!

Allan: What have you on tractor for ballast, re wheel weights, calcium chloride in tires or weight added to drawbar. An H with a loader can be much enhanced by use of ballast. I use exactly the same wheel chains as you bought on my 130 with 12.4x24 tire, probably same width as yours except with circumference you have a lot more wheel on ground than I.

Hi Hugh,

Yes, you are right. I used to have a JD 60 with a loader and fluid in the tires....couldn't get that thing stuck no matter how hard I tried.

The H has 2 sets of rear wheel weights and brand new ag tires. The chains are totally useless as they drop down into the lugs of those new tires; and I've got 'em tight with 2 sets of tighteners on too.

I think with a different style chain and the fluid, she would get around better.

I really like the H 'cause it runs like a top, but she is not earning her keep. The little 16 horse garden tractor embarrased us both! LOL

Allan: The new tires, one thing you can is run chain from one cross chain to next in center of tire, even a chain between every 2nd pair. Use cross chain for that. If your not a welder, small coupler links or D links probably cheapest way to go. Beats throwing away what you have.

Hi Allan, if you have lots of $$ and want real chains, these are the ones that are used in my area of Canada but are probably a little over kill for a driveway.
