I'm looking for the paint codes for McCormick-Deering Grey (pre-1935). I have seen two different shades, a light and a dark? Which is correct? I've heard that they were using battleship surplus paint at the factory, but has anyone declared one shade to be "the one"? I am starting on a 10-20, and want to get the right shade of grey for it.

Brian, this is just my guess but from looking at old black and white factory photos I believe that some of the early ones may have been painted a lighter grey. I would paint any 10-20 the dark grey because i think they look better that way. What I do is buy a gallon of rustoleum gloss black from Walmart and hand match a little white in it, (takes about 1/3 cup)

Van Sickle Paint in Lincoln, Nebraska makes a great version of the "McCormick Gray."

You get what you pay far, Van Sickle is cheap paint. It is an alklyd enamel rather than acrylic like the newer paints -- alklyd means it will fade in a relatively short period of time.

I'm ot necessarily looking to buy top of the line paint, but I want it to look good, and to hold its color. I'm kind of on a budget when it comes to paint and supplies, and I want to get the best bang for my buck.

I've heard some bad things in the past about the durability of Van sickle paints. If you're looking for a color match, go get a can of Plastikote #1006 dark/med gray. I forget if it's called Dark or medium, but the number is correct. Anyway, it's the proper dark bluish-grey. I painted my 34' F-12 entirely by hand using 1006 and it was beautiful. Held up nicely too. If you're going to spary it properly, you can get paint matched to the 1006 color. If you want a photo of my 12, send me an email and I'll forward it to ya so you can see the color I'm talking about.
