I may be paranoid but there are at least 7 tractors on the auction section, All from the Chicago area, all with free shipping, none will give a telephone number and none can spell Illinois. I will apologize if wrong but how do I contact YT and warn them? Dan J, Fredonia NY

Dan J. I don't think you're paranoid. I appreciate your posting,Thanks. I have used the auction and have always been satisfied with the system. I am sorry that you spun up Hugh MacKay but I guess that is pretty easy to do, do you know what he meant by, "So much for a bag of nothing written one paper." ?? Dick Davis

Re: Re: I think I found a scam on this site, Help in reply to Dick Davis, 03-09-2004 05:14:21
Dick: Like you I have used this auction very sucessfully for numerous small ticket items. I personally don't buy anything in the line of used cars, trucks, tractors or equipment in excess of $500. sight unseen. I did bid on a couple of tractors in the very early stages of the bidding process. In both cases I did E mail the seller advising that if he had photos of both sides and ends of tractor, it would help me decide how far I would bid. The first guy I never heard tell of. The second guy E mailed 4 photos, 3 clear ones, and the left side of tractor, a photo blurred so badly you could just see the outline of tractor and what appeared to be a rag hanging out of a hole in the engine block. Needless to say neither of these guys ever got anymore bids from me.

And yes I do believe Dan is maybe not paranoid, but over reacting a bit. To begin with everyone selling or buying at YT auction must be registered. YT also keep a history of the dealings of both buyer and seller. At the end of the auction YT puts buyer and seller in touch with each other. They can choose not to do that and call the auction of that item void for a number of reasons, some of which Dan has raised. In this era of communications I see no need for a vendor to include his phone number, in fact very few do. To other item he raised was no reserve bid. In my opinion reserve bid should never be allowed if it is a true auction. If you have a reserve put it in photo classifieds. I think we need not say much about spelling on this site, mine included.

As to the bag of nothing on paper, I was refering to the laws we have in Canada and in the United States stating it is illegal for anyone to use anything they hear on a cell phone for their own advantage. What a usless pair of documents, and how would it ever be policed, particularly if the person never told anyone what he or she heard.

You may think I am rather quick to get upset about items of discussion. I am a frugal man, that has been a necessary part of my survival. I don't need to be frugal anymore, but I am. I don't have to get up anymore at 5 am to milk the cows, but I still rise at 5 am every morning. In the past 14 years I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I was still in bed after 5 am. In my lifetime people have become so free with their money, one can no longer drive a bargain. In the 1950s and 60s you could go into a new car, truck or tractor dealer and bargain as much as 25% off the initial price. You try that today, and they will laugh you right out the door. I could go on and on and on, but I am not going to. I will just say I see some painful days ahead for most of the free world, you can not live indebted to others forever.

Hugh, Overall, I think Kim and Co. do a bang up job of monitoring not only the content of what goes on on this site, but keep a watchful eye on the sale boards and auctions. I remember about a year ago or so, A father and son were posting tractors up for auction, and then were bidding on eachothers items for the purpose of fixing the auction and driving the selling price up. They got caught, and were tossed out of here on their virtual ears. There will probably always be people who will try to abuse the system, but why would any of us treat an ad here any different than we would a newspaper ad. Would any of us blindly send money to someone selling a car or truck, or tractor without seeing the merchandise from a newspaper ad? If not, then why would we do it here online? I too have bought small items over the net, but here again, I don't risk more than I am willing to lose. Scammers exist not so much because they are so smart as because some of us are sooooo o stupid. I sure would hope tho that misspelling is not the #1 criteria for discerning the legitimacy of the issue. If that be the case, then I'm afraid a lot of people will have missed the context of the real issue.

Paul: There is no question, Kim and her staff do just an excellent job of operarting this site. They show tolerance, yet clamp down where it is necessary. I have been on here for about 4 to 5 years now and have watched YT evolve into what it is today. At different times I have shown this sitr to people who have no interest in old tractors. The reaction is almost always, what an excellent site. I must say I have never seen such excellence in a internet site.

I think the very best advice for anyone seeing something on here they think is questionable, the very best think to do is alert Kim through site comments. I assure you, Dan and Dick, Kim will deal with it very quickly. In my opinion it is her call, and not ours to be on here shouting about it. I can further assure you, you will receive a nice thank you from her. However, never tell her what to do, just suggest she may want to investigate.

I personally dont buy anything, even a 10 dollar part unless there is a phone number to go with it, and I normally verify the phone number and talk to the seller beffor I send any money. It is to bad that some one is doing this on this site, I have bought and sold several times here, and everyone is pretty honest.

I know someone else probably noticed this, but I didn't have much time tonight--I looked at several of the "sellers" and saw that every one I checked had yahoo email addresses. I saw one was in Amsterdam and said "free shipping". Yeah right--you know what it cost to ship 5000#'s of iron overseas??? It ain't free.....

They are scams. The JCB backhoe and the 606 IH with loader were also on E-bay as legit auctions. The thieves copied the pics and the adds word for word and posted them over here. I notified Kim and they've deleted items twice but I see there things back again

Couldn't they make it mandatory that all fields , such as name, address and phone are posted or the item could not be auctioned?

It is probably nothing, and it IS suspicious that someone can't spell their own state. Nothing wrong with a little heads up for those who might need it.

Dan: So what is wrong with that, they have an e mail, probanly have a reserve bid and lots of people can't spell. IL. I have bought numerous items on there and never knew the persons phone number. YT knows who they are, as they have to register to sell. Welcome to 2004.

Hugh, A John Deere 4200 starting at $2500, no reserve? JD 8200 starting at $3200, JCB backhoe for $4000? A John Deere 4840 for $3600? And 4 of these sellers can't spell the state they live in? Sorry, I don't think I bumped my head when I fell off that turnip truck. Think you are wrong on this one but bid if you want. Dan

Dan: I never indicated at anytime I was interested in bidding on these or any other tractors on that auction. In my opinion anyone who is prepared to bid in excess of $500. on any item on an online auction, has rocks in his head. The only way this old guy bids on a tractor is live auction, and it must be running. Anything else is a parts tractor.

Where I come from most folks learned by the time they were 12 years old what a scam is, and how to spot one. The very best thing in the world is just ignor them. So if anyone is prepared to bid on or buy a tractor sight unseen, there is nothing you or I or anyone else can do to help him. Remember the old saying,"A fool and his money are soon parted."

I think a lot of people confuse the Internet with TV; TV with reality, and are easily fooled.

riverbend: Speaking of reality, these online auctions fit right in with cell phones and the law that says you can't use any thing you accidentally hear on one, to your advantage. If one never tells what they heard, who can judge if there was an advantage. So much for a bag of nothing written one paper. Same with Ms Stewart, she douped them, at their own game, I think she deserves a medal. Stock market afterall is little more than a rich man's lottery. I even protest at the local grocery store if part of the purchase price is a lottery. If I want a lottery ticket I will buy it, not have it forced on me. Every morning on your favourite radio station, lo the stock market report for the yuppies. It should just be part of anouncing the winning lottery numbers, same catergory.

Man, did someone get up on the wrong side of the bed this AM? A guy does a nice thing and gets ragged on and it ends up in a condemnation of the entire internet and the stock market? I'll leave the internet alone but fathers and grandfathers have invested in stocks for decades to the betterment of the economy and their families. So a few bad apples got in there, stocks can and are still a good bet. There are gamblers (day traders) in the market but there are also a lot of honest investors who buy solid companies based on research and hold the stock long term. I am one of them and my investments are consistently strong. Don't be in such a hurry to condemn.

Hugh, I use the lottery system to pay my bills. Every month I putt all the bills in a hat and then blindly draw them out until I run out of money. The rest I leave in the hat so that next month that bill has a 2-1 advbantage. Seriously, I would agree with you except that any of us with 401-K retirement plans or who invest in IRA's depend on the companies we invest in to operate at a profit, and operate without cooking the books or being able to trade their own stock at an advantage not available to the rest of us. Twenty years ago, it could be said that there was "Corporate America" and then there was the rest of us, because we had long term employment with long term retirement plans. Even then our pension funds were invested in corporate stocks, sometimes in the company we worked for. Since the average employment with any one company has gone from 15 to 20 years or more to an average of less than 5 years before moving on, both hourly and salaried workers have invested more into their own pensions and retirement than they did 20 yrs ago. Of course, the stock market is a gamble if we go for the high risk stocks, but there is money to be made in investing in stock as long as we don't invest it all in one place. I for one would rather take my chances with Corporate America than to give it to the government in the form of taxes and expect it to put my well being in its hands. Nobody has ever gotten rich on whatever stipend they recieve from the government. Gee, Hugh, wouldnt this be a great coffee conversation? And to think I could have been spending this time working on my tractor.

Paul: You may as well worked on your tractor. I agree with one point, depending on government would be a far greater risk than Corperate America.
