A buddy of mine is looking at a SMTA, The guy wants $5000 CAN for it. He ask what an m gos for down my way, i said $1500- $2000, then i though after i was talking to him that that is a price of an a i saw. So an m would go for $2500-$3500 i would think, so the $5000 for the SMTA isa good price. I could be wrong about the prices cause i never boughta tractor before, so if you can help me out on this that would be great. This SMTA is in mint cond. TA is very good, All of tractor is good. Is $5000 a good price?

Thanks in advance!

Recently bought a SMTA in Oklahoma for $2000 with great (not new) tires, fresh paint, recent overhaul, T/A not working (stuck in low).

For another $650 the guy threw in an old H with 3-point, brush hog, and three parts M's in various stages of disassembly.

Wife said five in one day was a bit much. My old record was four.

My tractor is an MTA and I have been looking the past six months or so for a second one. Mine is a working tractor and likes it that way. I have looked at a lot of them recently and watched as they sold or didn't sell. They aren't going as high as these prices listed here. There are a lot of people ASKING the $4K and up prices but very few are GETTING those prices unless it has some of the rarer options and is exceptional in some way. I am seeing a lot going for $3200-3500 in just good original shape with maybe an imperfection or two along with rust. Good field tractors for nostalgia buffs like me. There always seems to be a contingent who wants them to be worth more. I think it is wishful thinking for the most part, at least right now. Good luck with it!

I gave $4600 for this one at my late uncles estate auction Dec. 13, 2003. Being a family tractor I had to have it--unfortunetly so did another guy. Runs alright but needs to be taken out and run hard for a while..

That's a nice tractor Mike. I hope you aren't second guessing yourself. If it was my uncle I would have bought her too!

I wish I could have gotten it cheaper, but I'd have kept that number right up even if it had got for 2K more than that. All my tractors have family ties, and though I couldn't get the big tractors I wanted from the sale I did get the one I could put to the most use. My cousin is about 8 and isn't really into tractors right now. If he wants it back at a later date he'll know right where to find it!

Mike

PS. If I would have had cash in hand I could have gotten the SMTA for $900 about 4 years prior to the sale...

forgot to mention--the auction was in Angola, Indiana and that is in US dollars. It has the belt pulley gearbox but no pully. It does have fenders, live hydraulics and PTO, and power steering. It doesn't have a 2 way hydraulic valve.

Farmallkid,
I paid $4500 for mine with an aftermarket 3pth, aftermarket dual remote hydraulic system and great tires all around. The Tractor market in New England is a good example of what Duane suggests. Because of their low maufacturing numbers, (+/-26,000) live power and hydraulics, T/A, and the nitch they fill in the IH history; you can't really compare SMTA value to an M or SM. A fully restored SMD maybe, but again, they are special beast's. Even the 400 series will sell for less than an SMTA. The SMTA is a good iron investment and a hard working machine. Good luck to you and your pal. Jared

3500-4000 U.S. is a pretty good price without 3 point. As long as there are people who want to continue to preserve history or people who want to take and make a buck off of the former, prices of these tractors will continue to appreciate. Yes, I know we couldn't restore without those people and they need to make a living but, some people are gouging and this drives up the price for all.
