I'll be picking up my first restoration project this weekend and I've noticed that the lift arms on the rear of the tractor are not even. I've looked through many pictures and have found some that are even and some that are not. The right is lower than the other. Everything that the arms are attached to appears to be even. Normal?

My '49 had uneven lift arms as you described on a solid bar. Upon close inspection you could distinguish a difference between factory weld and a patch job. I believe the patch was meant to adress one of two things; a typical error in judgement regarding the strength of the system while trying to lift or pull something or, as I understand my tractor was originally used to power a home milling operation, and I always wondered if these where altered to create more clearence around the works where the belt would have attached to the tractor at the rear pto pulley.

Thanks for the pictures Kevin. I enjoyed them. I didn't realize there was a bar on some that goes between the lift arms like yours. On one picture you said "She's a sad looking tractor". That may be true, but it looks better than the one I'm using. Good luck.

I have seen A rock shaft twisted that made the two lift arms ,one higher than the other.

Thanks for the followups. I think mine is a solid. Will take a closer look at it this weekend when I go to pick it up. Here's a link to it on my web site if you care to take a look:

Kevin. Sam is quite correct on this there are the two types. I have one of the same type as Sam's here. It came on a Super A I once owned, and someone welded it trying to make the rigid type, but not getting it straight or I should say even in the process. I tried to straighten it once, finally gave up and decided it was cheaper to either fabricate a new one or buy another one. I did find a rigid one in the end.

My Super A is like this and the reason is wear and tear. There were at least two different rear rockshafts available, the standard one with both arms fixed to one shaft, and the split one. On mine which has the split type you can raise and lower each side independently as well as lock the two together. Over the years the locking part of mine has bent so that the right lift arm starts to come up shortly after the left. Hope this helps. SAm in NS
