we have a 1942 H with a very weird hydraulic set up. i am attempting to return it to working order to pull a small mower behind it. there are several different connections coming from below the breather cap on the hydraulic system. one of the connections leads to a connection up near the engine oil fill (our thinking is that this is an additional or auxillary pump of some sort). pictures are available if somebody would like to take a look. any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like aliens have been messing around with your H. Give me the exact location of the tractor and I will immediately dispatch an expert to restore your H to it's original hydraulic configuration. All excess parts will be removed from your property and sent to my shop, er, I mean lab, for analysis!!!!

Sounds like your H has been converted to live hyd, with a pump in front of your distributer or magneto. If that is the case, your belly pump is no longer in use.

that could be. are you familiar with such setups? can they still be used to operate hydraulic cylinders?

They can be used for anything the dead hyd can be used for, the dead hyd don't work with the clutch pushed in. Except, you can't use the live hyd on your tractor with the old one-way IH cylinders, you need 2-way ones.

I didn't say anyone was doing anything wrong. I don't know what your setup is. If you have the IH cylinders with only one hose, then you have one way hydraulics, the pump does not care -- That's how the factory SH/SM/SMTA? live systems were set up. If you had the christmas tree remote, then you could have 2-way, I don't have this setup, if you do then you know how to rig it for one way, if those are the type cylinders you have. If you don't have the Christmas tree or some aftermarket spool valve, then you have the one-way system. Again the type of pump alone does not have much to do with it, far as I know. My three point is rigged one-way, just a hose coming from a pressure port, with a two way cylinder vented to act like a one way. It seems to work, but I just installed it and have not attached anything to the 3-point yet.

Dick-I responded to your post with my long-winded reply before I reread what I said originally. I was thinking of the M&W live pump on my M with spool valve and separate add on reservoir that completely bypasses the old system. Don't know what system the original post has. Complete and total brain malfunction--sorry.

If your tractor looks similar to this, then you have a live hyd. pump. Someone has either added it, or your H is not a 1942. Disregard the arrow and text on the pics, they aren't intended for this post.

I "borrowed" this picture from Kelly C. He is a regular here and has a great Farmall H website with lots of pictures and some good info. Thanks Kelly!!!
