My good loader is not going to used this year as it wont fit on my H or 300. The 400 has Haybine/Baler duty this year so wont be avalible for loader duty.
I was wondering if I could rig a bale spear on my trip bucket on my H to get bales on and off my trailer?

Leave the loader on the 400. I use my 460 on the haybine and leave the loader on. I have to unhook the hoses that control the bucket as that outlet is for the haybine.

A wide front is more safe for handling bales and the H could be used to push off or unload, but be real careful. I used a trip loader on a 350 to handle a lot of 5X6 bales. Remove the bucket and attach spear tool. Tie back with a chain.

Main thing is be alert and use care.

All winter long I have been moving roll bales with an H and horn loader. I just stab them with the manure tines and go. The only problem I run in to is that I dont have any fluid or wheel weights on the rear. I don't have the money for a newer tractor so I have to make it work.

O by the way the H more than enough power to lift roll bales. It can lift the bottom bale on a tripple bale high stack and move all the bales above it out of the way!!!!!

Kelly, if i were doing it i would use the 400 bacause it has the wide front. I know you want it for the haybine and run the big baler but the 400 would be more stable and just better all around. Use the 300 on the haybine even though it doesn,t have wide front it will work. I use my M with narrow front on mine can,t tell any difference in drying time maybe might dry quicker where the wheels run over the hay. The old h,s are not good with loaders they are to top heavy and rollover on flat land with loader bucket about the top of the radiator loaded with manure. That,s with the old #30 loader. Not trying to put monkey wrench in your plans but been there done that. Thanks for your time.

My experience is rolling on the hay as you mow makes it dry quicker, not slower, but I still don't like to do it.

I am talking about prairie hay and bermuda in OK where we get lots of sun. It may be the loose hay shades the lower portions.

I know this does not tie well with how I think a tedder works, but this is my experience.

Just leave the loader on the 400 and ditch the spear when using it in the field..... ..... .Heck, its only a year.

Kelly: I wouldn't worry about the Hs ability to lift the round bales. As for the safety concerns Paul and Michael are raising, where people are getting in trouble with this is on Utility type tractors and the fact you are sitting low and much closer to pivot point of loader. When that bale comes down those loader arms on a Utility you technically are right at the bottom of the incline. These accidents are not happening with bale spear, but rather with pallet type forks with out a built up back on the loader bucket. They should also have a frame work over the operator just in case.

My real concern is the same as Andy, without the hydraulic controll on loader bucket. you will find yourself uttering a lot of 4 letter words when the angle of the spear just isn' right. You want the 400 free for baling duty, the H will make a fine rake tractor. Why not put the loader on the 300, as either one of those loaders you have will fit the 300, plus live hydraulics and the second valve for hydraulic bucket control. Widen the 300 out to about 80" centers on rear tires and make up a concrete ballast about 7 to 10 cubic feet, that can be mounted on drawbar. I have forgotten whether you 300 has fast hitch, if so fast hitch forks can be cast right in the concrete block. Makes a great ballast that you can put on or remove quickly with little effort.

I handled a few 5x6 round bales with my 300, piece of cake for 300. Just build something so if a bale comes down it cant get you.

Thanks Hugh.
I measured the axle brackets on my all hydralic loader. They did not appear to fit the axles on my 300. If I can make them fit, thats what I will do.
That still does not solve the issue with how I get my loader tractor in 2 places at the same time. Load them on the trailer in the field 10 mi away and unload them at home.
I have a couple of Ideas for that. Using a 8000 pound winch I purchased last summer.

Kelly: I have hauled round bales all day with loader in field. To unload I just walked the center of trailer with the load two bales wide and just pushed them over the side. Works great with those 5 x 6 bales as you have a foot over the side of an 8' trailer, they push very easily. Problem is they are all over the yard until you bring the loader home.

If you want to E mail me I can tell you a good joke, unfit for YT reading, about unloading round bales this way.

Hey Kelly, How ya doin,I work in a large hospital in Springfield Mo. Last week we had a gentelmen come in that was lifting a round bale with a loader and somehow it rolled back down the loader onto the hood of the tractor and right over him. When I saw him he was wide awake and just above his waist was he was bent 90 backwards.Very awful injury. I don't know the details about his equipment or how it happened but just a reminder to be very careful moveing anything that heavy where it can get on top of you.Have fun,be careful, and live to teach your grandkids about your love of the land and old tractors.

Paul, an excellent example, it was reported in a Farm weekly here that a farmer had a very similair accident and it left him paralysed from the waist down, he had a good piece of equipment and he was stacking three high when one bale followed the loader back down over the hood and onto him guys be carefull...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Do you have 4x5 bales or smaller?

Otherwise I'd think you'd have equipment trouble even if it would lift them.

And with a trip loader you'd have to set it to go in at the raised elevation and would probably have trouble spearing hay on two different levels cause you can't adjust the spike.

Just my thoughts.
