Hi,
A friend of mine has a super c and when we changed the oil this weekend, we could not keep the canister from leaking. There was no gasket in the groove when we took it off, so we put it back on without one. It began to leak a small ammount of oil. We then tried to put the gasket on that came with the napa filter, but the groove was so shallow that it didnt go all the way down and you could readily see it as well as it still leaking. What do you guys do to keep them from leaking?
Thanks
Chuck McDonald

Thanks guys. I will tell my buddy to scratch around in there and get that sucker out. One other question. Has anyone else got a gasket that was way too big when they bought it from CaseIH?
Chuck

Next time you visit your Dentist (you do see the Doc 2 times a year, don't you?) ask for some worn out dental tools. They are just the tool for getting old gaskets out of a groove. You can find a hundred other uses for them also.
That way you will get some kind of return on your "investment".

I had a similar problem. I found silicon sealer when I removed my filter housing on my A. But, underneath that was another old gasket that didn't want to come out. Since I was rebuilding the engine and had it chemically cleaned, that took care of the old gasket problem.

Chuck, It would also be a good idea to replace the copper washer seal between the hold down bolt and cannister, since you have probably flattened it out by tightening trying to stop the leak from the rubber O'ring seal. Once you replace both O'ring seal and copper washer seal, tighten only slightly beyond stopping it from leaking

Chuck,I have a cotter pin puller that I use for
those, makes it real easy to get them out.I am
in the habit of putting in a new seal every
filter change,or every other time,as was
already mentioned, they harden up and are tough
to dig out if allowed to get very old.

I have been waiting for a gasket I put in to get hard. I think it takes a really long time, like 20 yr or more. Have come to the conclusion I have removed some factory gaskets 50 years later.

If your groove is too shallow, I'll bet there may be an old, hard gasket in the groove. I use something sharp like an icepick to clean the groove and get any old gaskets out.
It shoudn't leak at all with a good gasket.

The groove is quite deep, and from your description, I'm almost certain you have one or more old gaskets stuck down in the groove. With age and heat they get so hard and brittle they seem like iron! You'll have to chisel and chip the old gasket(s) out, down to bare metal. Be carefull!

Youv'e got some work ahead of you. The reason that the groove is too shallow is because there is a gasket already in there. This is exactly what happens when the previous owner changed the filter without changing the gasket, eventually, the gasket becomes hard and brittle and will no longer seal, but by then it has become so packed in there that you can't get it out except in pieces. You will need some sort of a pick and whatever else you can come up with to dig and scrape the old one out of there. Good luck, been there, done that.

Could be, I am actually up to where I can use two fingers now instead of the one finger hunt and peck system.
