C Steering Question

On my Farmall C, when I turn the steering wheel and watch where the steering worm shaft enters the housing I notice movement of the shaft in and out depending on which way you turn the steering wheel.(no side play)
I have looked at the Parts Manual and a Shop Manual trying to determine what would tighten up the “end play” of this shaft.
Since I have never had it apart and won’t be able to taking it apart soon, I was wondering if any of you guys or gals that have had one apart could tell me what the problem is.
Looking at the diagrams in the books, there is a nut on the opposite end of the shaft that looks like it holds the bearing on the shaft and then there is a bearing retainer that screws in to hold the bearing in the housing
The end play is a total of maybe 1/8 inch but judging how quickly I see the movement start, I think if I could adjust this out, the steering would be pretty tight.
I have just replaced the U joints and that made a huge difference.
I'd appreciate any advice from you guys/gals that have had one apart.

Thanks!

Gary

Just replaced the bearing in my super c and also the round gear with the teeth on it, it broke two teeth off, I would not wait until you break something else in the steering, I did and it cost me extra. Once the bearing goes it will break something else if you keep using it.

There is a bearing on the end of the worm gear shaft. The outer race of the bearing is clamped to the housing by the big plug with the hex on it. You can see the plug if you take the grill off. The inner race of the bearing is held to the worm gear shaft by a castle nut with a cotter pin. If you have end play in the worm shaft, it is either a shot bearing, or the bearing is not properly clamped in place on the inner and outer race. The bearing is easy to replace. You will have to take the steering shaft loose where the universal joint is attached to the worm shaft. It's held on with a "roll pin" and is keyed with a half moon (woodruff) key. Once you have the universal off, take the big plug (drain the oil out of the steering gear first) with the hex out of the front of the bolster and you can screw the worm gear and shaft with the bearing right out. Sometimes you need a washer bushing to get the plug to clamp the bearing in place correctly. While you have it off, might as well replace worm gear shaft seal.

You're are correct in your description, nut holds bearing & retainer holds brg. in housing. Remove retainer, make sure nut on shaft is tight. With retainer removed, hold outer race of brg. with something(screwdriver, etc.)& have someone rock steering wheel back & forth while watching shaft and brg. movement. You should be able to determine if brg. is worn out, good possibility, while doing this.

Thanks everyone for all your replies.
Your answers have satisfied my curiosity until I can get it apart to look at it. It’s just been bugging me and I'm anxious to check it out as soon as good weather and my free time coincide.
I already have a new seal on hand and also a new woodruff key for the shaft since the old one has some wear on it.
The yoke for the universal had a cotter pin holding it on and I have a roll pin to replace that.

Thanks again !
Gary
