Hello;

I'm poking in from the Ford N-series board but i'm actually working on a 1948 Long Model A tractor. The reason i'm asking here is the Model A was very very similar to the Farmall H. Rumor has it that the company quite making the tractor as a result of lawsuits from International Harvester.

Anyways, I need to find a brake for the right hand side of this tractor. It uses a band brake type mechanism with a shoe on the outside and a shoe on the inside with the "drum" sandwiched between them. Does anybody have a picture of what the inside of a farmall H brake system looks like? I had a feeling that the H and M used just an external band system, but i'd like to check. Thanks!

Try putting that picture on the Oliver Forum, Kinda looks like a Cockshutt brake on my son's tractor.

Although the Long A was styled like the Farmall H,and some features are simular, that is all that is alike, I don't think anything was the same. The Long had 4 forward speeds vs the Farmall's 5 forward speeds. The H had its own IHC 152.1 cu in 4 culinder engine where the Long used a Continental 4 cylinder 162 cu in engine. I never heard of a lawsuit against Long by IHC.

I can't seem to find any records of any litigation to this effect, so it's probably just urban legend. I agree, the similarities are only in sheetmetal and overall tractor layout (location of the battery, hyd pump, belt pulley, seat, light bars, etc) and there are enough differences to keep them apart. I always thought the unstyled JD's and the F-series tractors on steel looked rather similar when covered in rust and at a distance..... :-P

I have never hear of a long model Farmall A! Could you post a picture of the whole tractor and tell us a little more about it? Is it similar to a Farmall C?

Here ya go. The one that is restored is not the one we have at the plant, but rather what we want it to look like. Another person here on the YT site restored it but I can't remember his name. Rumor has it only 3-500 were built. The unrestored pictures I have in my photo gallery are of serial number 4, which is on loan to us from one of the Long family members. The company just bought a running Model A, serial number 20 and a parts tractor to go with it, #299. I was grinning ear to ear when I drove it to the storage area at work with everybody watching!

Jeb2N: While I have been aware of the Long tractors for years, I never did pay much attention to them, nor did I ever see one. However, looking at your photos, I can see where IH would have been a little upset on this design. At a distance they could pass for an H or an M.

Any good clutch/brake shop should be able to reline those shoes at reasonable cost. I've had my local shop do several sets of "orphan" shoes similar to yours. They look/work great!

The reason I'm asking is the entire drum, shoes, and linkages are MISSING from the tractor I have right now. I only have left brakes, The right brake doesn't exist except for the pedal. That's why I was asking if I could just use parts off of an H since the two tractors are very similar and there are lots of H's in the junkyard...not so many Long Model A's. I'm looking for parts that I don't currently have...sorry for the confusion.

On the H the band squeezes on the hub,not like what you have.You may have to have the pads relined.A few places near me do it,email me and I can give you there number.
