IHC 354 brakes - leaking shaft seals

I have new brake disks ready to install, but now notice that the existing disks and wedges are oily. I would expect that this has been the source of my insufficient brake problem; leakage from the shaft seals that has saturated the disk material. Question: can these leaking seals be replaced from the outside of the case, or do I have a major task ahead of me? Can someone kindly "splain" what I need to do.

Have a seat. The seals you are looking to replace cannot be replaced from outside the case. The good news is that you do not have to split the tractor. That's where the good news ends. Those seals reside in the bull pinion shaft bearing cages. The cages must be removed from the tractor and disassembled to replace the seals. You cannot just unbolt the cages and pull them out of the case. Along with other issues, the bull gears simply will not allow removal of the cages.
To get the cages out you must remove the hydraulic housing, remove the rear axle assemblies and bull gears, support the dfferential and then remove the cages. Now you can disassemble the cages and replace the seals. Re-assemble.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you can't get at those seals without removing the hydraulic reservior and rear axles. I am in the middle of doing the same thing on my B-275 right now. I would not reccomend starting a job like this without an I&T or IH service manual.

If you don't get to replace the seals there is a hole for the gear oil to drain out of it gets past the seals. You may want see if it is plugged with crud. It was on mine.
