16A mower - any online info?

in my post of a few days ago, "25V on old F-14", a gentleman, Ralph, replied that a #12 mower would be suitable for an F-14. i can only find reference to a model 16A mower, and am wondering if this is what he meant to reply. anyway, i think one of the mowers i got was a 16A but i haven't found any good descriptions of one or close-up pics. the mower i bought looks similar to a 25V, but mounts directly to the tractor somehow, not with a subframe and rear wheel like the 25V. what i'm really looking for is a picture/diagram that shows what is needed to mount it to a F-14. would this info be in the 16A manuals offered for sale on this site?

well, it looks like i can look for brackets to mount the #16, or just swap the 5' bar and several parts over to the 25V i picked up at the same time. i love a good project! i was leaning towards going with the 16, but it seems like the 25V may be a better choice, since it has the frame and mounting brackets already there.

The mower shown in your pictures is a No.16A or B because the drive shaft shield is mounted on it's side.
The No.12 mower had an enclosed gear drive to the pitman as did the original No.25 semi-mounted mowers. They also had a slip clutch incorporated in the splined universal joint that attached to the tractor PTO shaft.
As Ralph has suggested if you can obtain the HM drawbar you could probably fit this mower to your F12-14. I had an F-12 with a No.12QA mower complete with the instruction manuals but sold it a couple of years ago so can't help you with photos. Sid.

Andy You are missing the mounting frame and kickback for the mower.Find the mounting frame for a H/M mower and you will be able to mount the mower on a F12/14.Ralph

here is a second pic. it looks like the mower would be mounted using the spring-loaded bolt on the right underside of the frame. like i said, if anyone has any close-up pics of mounts or a scan from a manual, i'd be grateful. the 25V mower i picked up looks to use almost identical parts as this mower, if that helps any.

Andy, That looks like the 16-HM mower,or it is missing some brackets to fit the A or B. I think you need to find a 25-V or a 27-V for your F-14. That's what I use on my F-12 and F-14. I don't recommend the model 12-QA as this mower uses a bar release that must be manual reset after tripping. You have to stop and get off the tractor. Also the 12-QA PTO drops off every time the bar releases. I've got one of these mowers too but I'll just use it for display.

Andy, The mower was made for the F12/14,it bolted to the drawbar clamps and had a foot pedal along with the hand lift to assist in lifting.I have a pic somewhere . I also know where there is one still being used.Ralph

Andy, I have a McCormick parts catalog that has a listing for the Number 16 mower.
The books says it is for an A, B, BN, H, M and MD Tractors from 1939 on.
Manual doesn't have a # 12, but as I mentioned, the manual is from 1939 upward.

Was the 12 QA the mower for the F-12 & F-14? I remember that it was used on the F-20 & F-30.

would you have a picture of a 12QA? or at least any way to identify one? i'm not sure what i have, but i'd say it is a model prior to a 25V.

Andy: I just looked through the book 150 Years of IH by CH Wendel and here is what he said about the QA mower. The No. 12-QA mower was built from 1935 to 1941. It used no outside support wheel, but featured an improved lifting mechanism. It also had a "Quick-Attachable" design which permited one man to mount or detach the mower in minutes.

Looks to me like it was just a number 12 mower with QA or Quick Attach. I am not familiar with this mower so I just repeat what Wendel said in his book.

Andy: I don't think you will find factory mounting for putting a 16A mower on an F-14. The 16A mower was designed speciffically for the Farmall A and would fit the Super A. I know the 16 also came as a 16HM and quite possibly there was a 16C. The mounting frame was the only thing different on any of these mowers, thus by now they could have been modified to fit a lot of tractors.
