New battery cables, rebuilt starter motor, New starter switch. The starter buzzes and seems to have a hard time turning over the engine, even with a battery charger/starter is hooked up. Battery shows "fair to good" condition on the hydrometer. Without the charger, there is nothing when you press the starter button. With the charger, I eventually get it to start (it takes a long while). Any thoughts?

The starter nose bushing can be worn to the point where the armature drags on the pole shoes inside.
Remove the starter and take it to a pro for repairs. Then your 6 volt will crank sooo nice.

Had the same problem with my H and thought oh well, it has a temprament. Then I readjusted the points in magneto and seems to be cured.

Try an eight volt battery.

Most likely your battery is shot.

I bought a brand new battery and replaced it, only to have the same trouble.

OK Pat that’s different! Here’s how I’d proceed:

1 – Fully charge the battery (stick the charger on it and leave it on the low setting overnight)

2 – Attempt a start. If it spins OK, you know just the battery needed charging. However if it still has trouble, problem's gotta be either high resistance somewhere in the starter power circuit, or the starter itself is bad.

3 - Do the easy stuff first: Clean the battery cable terminals – especially where the grounded cable bolts to the frame. Make sure it’s on a solid frame or engine block (NOT to sheet metal like the battery box)…ideal spot is under a starter mounting bolt. Check also the battery cables for damage – they can look good outside but be corroded nearly through under the insulation.

4 – If it still cranks slow, immediately feel around the battery cables, connections and starter switch after attempting a crank. The high resistance area will be noticeably warmer than the surroundings for a while after you crank. Or if you have a good voltmeter, take voltage drop readings one at a time across both battery cables and across the starter switch WHILE CRANKING. Any reading greater than about 0.2 volts while cranking means that component has an excessive voltage drop and should be replaced.

All the above of course presumes the new battery you bought is good (not always true, especially for 6 volt batteries purchased from a place where only a couple get sold a year). Good luck!

Had a Cadillac Sedan Deville do the same thing.

The batt. was under a year old, it would barely click, not turn over.
put the charger on it, and it wight be able to kick over once, thne die.

Put jumpers on from a Running Corvette and Ram 1500 (both have HD alts) and it would start slowly.

We almost had the engine apart to get at the starter, when I decided to call a friend. He said.."check your cables, and terminals"

Sure enough, one was corroded on the bottom of the terminal. Cleaned it up, and it fired up immediatly!

Coincidentally, a month or so later it did the same thing again, but there was no corrosion, the batt. was bad. Had 12.1 volts on it, but no amps, it had shorted out inside.

In all the cars, mowers and tractors Ive had, most have had a no start situation, and only once has it been a starter. on a '62 Wheel Horse mower, one of the brushed had come loose and dropped into the armature..*nasty*

Every other time it was a bad battery, or a switch or wiring.
