Need an Axle Clamp for a Farmall 656 tractor

I managed to get all but one bolt loose on both rear wheels this past weekend to move the wheels in. I had to use heat to get the one bolt to loosen up and only managed to get it to turn about two turns..... This was enough for me to move the wheel in but when I when to tighten it back up it would not budge. I even tried heat while using an impact and could not get it to tighten up.

It looks like I am going to have to cut the bolt in two and replace the clamp section (the half round cast iron piece with the keyway in it) as well as buy a new bolt (the other one came out no problem).

I called the local case dealer and the part is on national backorder with CASE. I don't want to use the tractor as I can slip a .020 feeler gauge between the axle and the clamp (with the one good bolt tightened up) and am afraid of damaging the wheel.

Do any of you guys have an old one laying around that you want to get rid of?? Please send me an e-mail if you do. I live in Dallas TX

Thanks,

Harry

Curt,

I sent you an e-mail on the clamps..... .. Are you fairly sure that the 544 uses the same clamps as a 656? I'm clueless on wether they are the same.

I do know that the ones on an H are not the same size as my brother in law has an H and the bolts are not nearly as large as these.

I've had pretty good luck over the years blowing a twisted off bold out with the fire wrench. In cast pieces it works realy good cuz the steel bolt burns faster than the iron housing and the threads come out unhurt.

I thought about doing that as a last resort. But with my luck, I would mess up the clamp and not have a replacement available to fix it with.

I may give it a try this weekend.

Harry, I think you should heat that clamp up red hot and then douse it with cold water..lots of cold water at once to cause the quickest contraction of the heated metal..I will guaratee you that the rust and corrosion will break loose and you will be able to put some penetrating oil on it and turn it. I believe that the axle clamp is the same on H's and M's and any tractor wrecker in your state should have them..there are likely several other Farmalls that use the same axle clamp...ie) the same size axle..I did manage to break one one time and my local wrecker had another for the big price of $5...I had heated it red hot and was pulling on it with a Johnson bar and I guess it cooled too much before I got it out and I snapped a bolt off, the extraction more costly and time consumming than a replacement. Good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

Actually I think I heated it up too much!! I was using a rosebud on the torch and before I knew it the cast metal was starting to melt. That's when I got the impact after it and managed to get it to back out about two turns before it stopped.

Later when I tried to tighten it up is when I found it wouldn't budge (350 ft lbs torque). So I tried to heat the clamp while using the impact... still no go.

I am not familiar to this clamp so this may be for naught. Can't you drill the remaining part of the bolt out once you cut the bolt and get the clamp off? Good luck.

I could drill it and try an ease-out, but I don't have a tap to chase the threads with if they get screwed up. I'm just wanting to have a backup plan if I can't extract the screw from the clamp.

Here it is: hstearns@gte.net

Thanks,
