I was looking at a Farmall H yesterday and I was just wondering if there are any common problems or faults that occur with the H's that you should check if you were looking at buying one? Thanks, SAm in NS

The items listed are a good start, also check to see how the tractor drives in 4th and 5th gears, sometimes the transmission pops out of gear in 5th, this is not normal it is from people grinding the gears when shifting to 5th, also any unusual noises in the transmission or rear end when going down the road. the H typically has some gear noise but if it is excessive it may need bearings in rearend.
If the tractor shimmy's going down the road at a good speed then the front steering will need attention.

If the block has been welded, dont panic and walk away. Usually its no big deal. First check and see if its leaking currently, while running. See if its been recently cleaned. Indicating that the owner may be trying to conceal a leak that takes a while to appear. But a welded block is typical. If there is no oil i nthe water, and no water in the oil, its fine!

Manifolds, mufflers, seats...all inexpensive parts that are easy to fix if broken. IF these parts are in rough shape, ask for a lower price!

If the Transmision makes noise, loud rackety noise..id be concerend, cause while parts arent difficult to locate, they're a real pain to install.

I had an H a year ago. I checked the following things, Check engine compression should be better than 85 Psi per cylinder. Make sure it runs and drives good. make sure the trans mission shifts in all gears, 1 reverse and 5 forward....remember that 5th gear is 15mph, a little scary on a farmall H with no seat belts. Look for leaks in the engine and trans, start it cold, look for welds in the block and trans check fluid levels ask questions like, when was the last time engine oil was changed, check the tire condition too. Let it run for a while and restart hot. This should help.
