I bought some diesel fuel last year. It's sealed in a gerry can. Was wondering how long it's good for.

Thanks

Diesel fuel with a stability additive will be okay out to about 1 year, after that it begins to revert back to a heavier chemical state. Gums begin to form as the fuels oxidize. Also bacterial growth, both areobic and anaerobic will begin. The fuels all age differently, so it is hard to pin it down, but testing such as accelerated stability , etc. can tell you what you might expect. I would use it up before too much longer.

My experience supports Hugh's answer....diesel stored in a sealed can stays fresh for many years.

i know i've had some in a plastic can for about 3 yrs and its still nice, but i kinda wonder how it would react in the winter if it gels up i don't know if that breaks it down some to the point of separation or ?

Ken - Diesel won't separate or decompose in storage - even in low temperature. Only thing it might do is develop algae growth. But then only if there is water (condensation) in the container along with the fuel.

If in doubt fill a clear quart glass container with the fuel and shine a light thru it. If the fuel is clear (no trace of cloudiness) or have an odd rotten/musty smell it's OK. When you do use the fuel, pour it out slowly (to not stir it up). Discard the last quart or two in the bottom of the container - if there is condensation/algae it'll be settled there.

Bob: I always think diesel fuel smells rotten and musty. If you doubt my word just ask Mrs. MacKay after I've spilled some on my trousers. I assure you she will set you straight quite quickly. Then it wouldn't surprise me if you can find the same kind of advice right at home.

Good point Hugh. The Divine Mrs M reminds me of that frequently!

But "bad" diesel does have a different odor. However it's unlikely our wives really notice (or care about...) the difference.

Ken: Having said what I said, I should also qualify it by saying, if I ever have diesel fuel I question the quality of for any reason, I just dump it in my oil furnace. Whole lot cheaper to fix than an injection system on an engine.
