Ammeter Wiring on 12 Volt Conversion

I just converted my Super C to 12 volts with a single wire alternator. Tractor starts , runs great , lights all work as they should but absolutely no reading on the ammeter. The alternator is putting out good voltage but I show no charge and nothing changes when I turn on the lights. The needle just sits in the middle of the gage.
I have the hot line from the alternator running to the right post ( as you face the rear of the tractor )of the ammeter and the left post carries the wire from the starter post and a line to the fuse. From the fuse I go to the off/on switch and then on to the light switch and resister.

I must have something wrong. Oh its a new ammeter.

The alternator connects to one terminal on the ammeter, along with ANY AND ALL loads.

The battery connects to the other terminal on the ammeter BY ITSELF.

If the ammeter reads backwards, switch the wires on the ammeter from one post to the other.

Check the voltage at the battery with a voltmeter.

If the tractor has not run for a few hours, the battery should read about 12.5 Volts. Start the tractor. The ammeter should show charge, and the battery voltage should gradually come up to about 14.5 Volts. If the ammeter still shows no charge as the battery voltage is climbing, you have a bad ammeter. When the battery voltage reaches about 14.5, the charge rate will taper off to just enough to keep the battery up.

If the ammeter shows no charge AND the battery voltage does not come up, you have charging system problems.

An Amp meter measures flow of current...just like a water meter measures the flow of water through it.
Your amp meter has to be in line some where between your alt. and the battery post.

I believe it is. The lead from the alternator goes to one side of the ammeter. The other side connects to the starter terminal where the battery cable is attached.

Be sure to put the load on the opposite side of meter from the batt. Otherwise no dicharge will show when you turn on the lights etc.
