I have a early A model distilled tractor 1939 with flat head piston in it. Can I put high step piston in it and not hurt any thing for more power? Please advice? Thank You

On the A Farmall the pistons are what makes it a fuel burner. The heads are all the same. You will get a lot more power out of your tractor with step head pistons.

The heads are not the same. IH made kerosene, distillate, and gasoline heads.

Out of the A & B parts book . Head number 6716DAX From serial number 501 to 22375, 9052DXA serial number 22376 and up. When I go to the page in the parts book that has the pistons there are several choices. The pistons are listed as sleeve and piston sets. The kits are marked Gasoline, Kerosene, and Distillate. As I said on my previous post. The difference between fuels types was with the pistons. Email me and will help you out with the type of pistons you need.

My Super A parts book does show a head that it does not designate fuel for (9052D, and 9052DXA-same as the A and B), for the 1st 5000 or so tractors. After that heads are designated by fuel. All C heads are fuel specific, as are H and M heads. I assumed the A heads were the same. So I apologize for the misinformation, and deserve a thousand or so lashes with a wet noodle. Someday I'll learn never to assume anything.

What is the difference between the distillated and gasoline?

I'm not the expert on this, but the compression chamber is a different size on the distillate and kerosene heads and compression is lower. Power with GASOLINE in a distillate/kerosene engine is less than it would be with the fuel the engine was designed for (that is what the Operator's Manual says). I have heard that you shouldn't use step head pistons with a distillate or kerosene head, I don't know if there is a clearance problem or if they don't work as well for some other reason -- someone will jump in with the correct answer.
