I agree. Modern oils are much better than what the engine was designed for. The big bearings and low pressures and temperatures let you use about what you want. Much has been made of having trouble if you use detergent in an engine which has used non-detergent oil it's entire life. I always switch a new tractor to detergent oil and have never had a problem. In fact I have a 1939 that has so much sludge in it you have to poke a wire in the drain hole to get the oil to drain. After several changes it is about cleaned out (it gets changed once per year). The average old Farmall you buy has probably not been changed or even checked in years. Our tractors get worked in hot weather and cold, we run 20W50 year round with good results. Several of our engines burn oil under load and the 20W50 helps. We use drainings from all oil containers in squirt guns and oil bath cups. This includes motor oil, automatic transmission fluid, gear grease, and hydraulic fluid. We get good results with hydraulic fluid in belly pumps due to switching implements between tractors, but in our mowing M we had to go to 30W in order to pick up a nine foot swather with a worn belly pump. Don't be concerned if you drain clear water out of the rear end.
