Voltage Regulator Question

Helping out a friend with his A. He bought a voltage regulator at Tractor Supply to replace the existing cut-out relay with. Three terminals on the side of the regulator and one on the bottom. The three on the side I assume are for the armature, field and battery connections, but what does the one on the bottom connect to. No diagram or instructions came with it and I haven't taken a look at it yet. Told him not to do anything until we find out what goes where. Any help you can give would certainly be apprectiated.

Thanks Bob! That was my assumption on the connections, and my other assumption was that there was an L terminal on the regulator. But, not having seen it, I didn't know for sure. We'll be changing it back to positive ground, so we'll have to re-polarize the generator when the regulator's installed. If I remember from some of the other posts, that's a matter of shorting from the Gen terminal to the Bat terminal on the regulator. Right?

You've got polarizing figured out Maurie! Just note that if the ammeter reads "backward" after polarizing you'll need to swap the wires on both ammeter terminals.

Incidentally the regulator "L" terminal is intended as an external load (ignition, lights) supply point. However taking the load connection from the ammeter accomplishes the same thing

Thanks Bob, I appreciate the information. I figured that was the deal with the L terminal and the ammeter, but wasn't sure. Thanks again!

Maurie - The for your setup the regulator should be wired up like this:

FLD - to generator F terminal
GEN - to generator A terminal
BAT - to ammeter
No connection is made to the regulator L terminal.

Make sure the regulator base is solidly grounded - otherwise it won't work right!
