the guy i work for has a farmall 450 that won't run. doesn't pop or anything. i've torn the carb apart and cleaned it all up but it didn't make a difference. there is spark at the plugs. anything else that coudl cause this? could the spark be weak? i've got points for it, but don't know the gap/dwell. does anyone have this information? i'd love to hear any other ideas of things to check
thanks

thanks for all the replies. so ya'll think even though the plugs aren't getting wet, if i replace them and the points i might get a pop or two? i'll give it a go and see what happens
thanks again

Andy Set the oint gap at .020 and plugs at .030 if you take them out. You might pull a plug to see if gas is geting to the cylinders. If you don't have the right plugs they can do this.

that's where i'm kinda confused. i work on many motors often, but i haven't worked much on these old tractors. i can't seem to get the plugs wet with fuel. if i crank it over, fuel will drip through the little hole in the bottom of the carb after a little while. the carb has been cleaned, all the passages are clear. i have no idea why fuel won't get drawn into the cylinders.

Put a teaspoonful of gasoline in each sparkplug hole, replace plugs & wires, (correct firing order?) turn on the switch, then crank it over.
If it fires at that time, you are not getting gas from from carb to cylinder. Is the intake manifold gasket OK? Did you get the governor slot and carb tab meshed together when reassembling the carb??
Hold the wire from coil to distributor 1/4" away from metal ground (pull out of center distributor tower) and have someone crank the engine. Do you have spark?? With battery ignition, just "snapping" the points with the switch on will give a spark also. Is the rotor turning? Watch with cap removed and coil wire grounded so no stray sparks fly around starting a fire.
Last question; is the gasoline fresh?? Gas goes "sour" in about 30 days so always add fresh fuel. And don't buy huge quantities to store or you will have some very poor fuel after a while.

Andy - You might check to see if the valves are in time with the crank. (Run a compression check on the engine; or set the front pulley at TDC, then check that both valves on either #1 or #4 fully closed).

What sometimes happens is the live pump on the Super M/400/450 motors motors causes the hub in the cam gear to break or strip out the keyway. You'll have gas at the carb and a hot spark. But depending on how far the cam gear has slipped, gas won't get sucked in hence not even a pop out of the engine.

I've seen it on at least 3 different tractors the past several years....
