Working on the new drive to the garage. My great neighbor is spreading out some gravel with his skid steer.

And then, it happened.

He got stuck.

And he worked at getting out.

And he sank further into the clayey silt.

And he gave up, the soil too gooey to allow self rescue and eager to swallow him up more.

Two hours later I arrive home to find the Case skid-steer sunk into the earth 6-10" past the axles.

Hummm.

Well we hooked up the loader to the 300 via a stout chain.

I shifted into 1st, pulled the TA lever back, throttled up about 1/
2 way, slowly let out the clutch and with not even noticable change in engine rpm or the slightest strain I dragged the Case out.

Having a great neighbor with cool equipment great!

Having a 300 Farmall priceless.

Having the 300 for 3 months I am now drunk with power! My former primary tractor was a whipped Ford 2N btw.

In my experience, skid loaders are really handy, but not much good in the mud or slop. The only way I have found to get along with one is to work my way into the barn cleaning manure - would like to back in and push manure out, but that just doesn't work!

Now the H on the other hand... that one's never been stumped by anything I've asked it to do!

Steven: Really lets not get riduclous, a 50 hp skid steer will get behind the pile and push at least twice what your H will.

In 1972 I had a Farmall 560D with a IH 2000 loader and a 55 gal drum full of concrete I could add for a counter weight any time. I bought a new Case 1737 Uniloader as I needed a loader that could work in close quarters. As time went on we found we used the 560D less and less for loader work. In 1975 I needed a second loader for use in close quarters, so a second Case 1737 was purchased. At that time one could purchase two Case 1737's for the price of a new 666 with a loader similar to the 2000 loader. And each one of the case 1737 would do about twice the work per hour as the tractor. Within 6 months the 2000 loader was taken off the 560 forever. Mind you we did have muddy and sloppy conditions. I once moved 72 dump truck loads of fill from edge of a cemetary into the rows of head stones for leveling so as to accomodate larger mowers. I did that in 6 hours, and probably the average move was 150'. You cant do that with a 1066 even if you were just moving the fill from one pile to another.

I was down to Windsor the other day, on the 401 the 4 lane highway running from Montreal to Detroit. That highway is all fenced on both sides. There was a crew replacing broken posts in that fence. Equipment about a dozen trucks. From the looks of the crew I think they must have gone to work that morning driving two trucks per person. They had two skidloaders with rubber tracks over the tires. One had a post hole auger, the other a dirt bucket. The 100 hp 4x4 tractor with the posts on the trailer down in the mud to the top of front wheels and half way up the rears. When I came back about 3 hours later the fence crew and loaders were down the road 2 miles and a big tow truck was hitched to the tractor. Sometimes the bigger they are the harder they fall. I expect you can still buy two 50 hp skid loaders with tracks included for the price of that tractor in the mud.

Bill: Those skidsteers a not a particularly hard pull, as they are much like a flat bottom boat with 4 wheels protruding about 10 inches. That is the beauty of doing loader work with them. Had the loader been on the 300 it can go down 3 feet, now that would be a pull. Safe to say the skid loader wouldn't have pulled the 300 out.
