Fellas, I purchased a 53 SM to restore and eventually make a little hay with when I retire. I am replacing all seals and bearings in the transmision and axle housing. If you were doing this would you also tear the motor down and remove the 50 plus years of non detergent sludge? The motor does not smoke. But I would hate to run into a problem once she's pretty! Thanks for your input.

Definately drop the pan! When I got my '47 M and changed the oil for the first time, it would not take the 8 quarts of oil the manual said it should take. I dropped the pan (took 5 minutes) and found 2 inches of gray sludge. I couldn't believe my eyes... that oil pump pickup screen was "propped up" by the crap...bent my best putty knife getting it all out ha ha.

Are You sure it's had non-detergent oil used in it? I'd pull the governor cover or valve cover & see if it's sludged up. LOT of farmers started using detergent oil back in the 50's, and by the 60's no one I knew was using non-detergent. Only people who recommend non-detergent oil now are the ones reading a 60-70 yr old operators manual! Use the same oil as You use in Your car or pickup!

Yeah, I wonder why people keep asking about non-detergent oil. Drove my 1st tractor in 1950 -- I don't remember non-detergent. But, detergent oil produces sludge too, particularly if the oil hasn't been changed regularly.

I agree with the others, drop the pan, pull the valve cover, scrape off as much gunk as you can and change the oil a couple times in relatively short order and you'll be fine.

You can get rid of 95% of the sludge by removing the valve cover, the side plate for the push rods, and the oil pan. If the engine has good even compression on all cylinders and doesn't use much oil, I wouldn't go any further.

If it has good oil pressure and good compression I would say no
