I am wanting to put a turbo charger on my 656. Does any know what kind to buy for this tractor with a 281 diesel and how to install it on the manifold? Where do you get oil from to the turbo and where do you drain it back to? I seen one on a 706 but did not get a good look how it was mounted. My local caseIH dealer did not know a lot on these tractors but knew they were common on 706's and said they would run at around 90 horse power but had to turn up the pump. How do you do that? Bought a new holland round baler and it requires a min.70 horsepower and recomended 90.

I had a 656 with a M&W turbo for years 6000hr when i traded it.Had good power 90hp then i would turn it up for tractor pulls to 120.Burned up a few glow plugs and one exhaust wheel but that was at high horse power. The 656&706 was the same M&W kit the only thing I didnt like was putting the extra hole in the hood. When I traded I kept the blower kit and now its on a 560 that I have.

I rmemember when I was a kid dad purchased a new 2 row silage cutter and had a 560 LPG tractor it would not hardly pull it in 1st with the TA in slow. The dealer did not have a 806 on hand and with 200 acres of sorghum silage to cut dad purchased a used 560 Diesel and they installed a M&W turbo on it. It pulled 95 HP and ran so hot that it would melt the ends of the glowplugs off. IT would pull the cutter in 2nd nad 3rd with the TA in low side most of the time. After silage cutting we started plowing and the 560 with the turbo would really pull the little 3 bottom spinner plow but was like a pop bottle rocket tied to a roller skate. You could start it out in 4th TA back and shift to 5th TA back at 1500 RPM and let out on the clutch rather fast and it would rare the front wheels off the ground a couple feet. Then one day in the field it quit going as it had spun the center out of a bull gear and dad had the dealer pick it up and there was a new 806 there and he took me past the dealers and told me to drive the new tractor home. The 806 pulled the plow so good we got a new 4 bottom spinner and the next fall when we cut silage the 806 pulled it NO BETTER than the 560 with the turbo did but did not run hot-started easy of a morning-and ran for 9000 hours with out anything but a clutch
For gosh sakes if you got to use the tractor for a 90 HP one get a 756-806-826 or 856!! you will not be sorry

no offence, but if you really read your post i can see why the 560 could not hold together.5th gear with a plow!?i mean really!no one ever made a tractor that would handle that kind of abuse for long.

what I meant was when you started out to go down the road with the tractor empty. It would rare up from 4th to 5th. I am sorry I did not make myself more clear. We could pull the plow in 4th but ran it in 3rd.
That 560 he had was a good tractor but I do still have some M&W trubo literature somewhere and I think the 560 was to be sat at 75HP. if that is right.

David the guys are right about adding stress to the engine and the rest of the tractor. But the 282 in the 656 and the tight sleeves so that is a good thing. Where I disagree it should put out just a mush as 560, but then 90 was alot fot 560.

Aces: I wasn't suggesting same couldn't be done on 656 as with 560, I just never did it. I didn't like doing it with 560, but I needed hp and no money for trading. My apologies if I misled you.

why would the sleeves matter in a dry sleeve engine?the sleeves are surrounded by the cast of the block.i would be more worried about what shape the bearings are in and i would probably replace them when i added a turbo.great uncle has a 656 turbo since new with 14,000 hours on it and has never had the engine apart, dynos 95hp.
the oil feed is from the oil filter assembly.

David: To start with do you want me to catch the pistons and block parts when they come flying through Ontario, By changing anything on a 30+ year old 282 would be nothing short of trouble. I took this kind of hp out of a 560 but it was a brand new tractor. An IH technician got mine over the 100 hp mark without a turbo. We didn't leave it there but did turn it back to 90 and at 11,000 it scattered engine parts all over the farm. I never tampered with my 656 and was well rewarded for keeping it at 63 hp.

For the money you are going to spend you could go out and buy a decent 100 hp tractor. Of 16 Farmalls I farmed with, 560 was the only one I ever tampered with. I rather doubt your baler requires this kind of hp anyhow. I've made round bales with my 300 when other thactors were busy. Not fast but will do it. My opinion if it takes 90 hp to run a round balr, time to get out the cutting torch.

I have a 656 with Mand W turbo and it is SWEET! Puts out around 75 horse I'd guess and runs my new holland 855 just a poppin'. But as Ken says if you tractor is old and tired you might be inviting problems.

our 560 has a flange welded to the exhaust manifold to bolt the turbo on it.i will look after lunch on where the oil comes from,as i recall it comes from the oil fiters.the old 560 has been set at 100hp since i can remember and i have been told it was that way when it was new.

Time to visit the tractor scrap yard and find a turbo kit from M&W for this. Don't expect to get big HP by adding a turbo as the 656 diesel won't produce this. Most likely you will create more engine problems than its worth by adding a turbo.

If need a 90 HP tractor get a 806, OR buy a smaller baler and use the 656.
