Broke my Ballast Resistor? IH504

I was pushing a large pile of branches with my 504 loader. A branch managed to break this white thing on the right side of the engine.

It broke and the engine stopped. Now it only fires once over and quits.

It is(was) white and right near the distributor cap. Wires screwed down on each end and a funny spiral wire in the middle. Seems to be ceramic.

Is this a ballust resistor? If so, where do I get a new one? Do I need to know anything about volts etc. or are they all the same? Am I going to zap myself putting a new one in?

Thanks in adavance,
Joe

I'm back and running. What an easy repair.

Local tractor dealer had the part ($14).

Of course, I slightly cracked the porcelian tightening the one screw too tight, ha ha.

Thanks guys

Yes, that is a resistor. It's purpose is to cut the 12 volts coming from the ignition switch down to 6 volts before the coil, so the distributor points don't get burned. Wardner is right about why yours fires once, when you push the starter button, the resistor is bypassed to put 12 volts directly to the coil for easier starting. If you just need to get the tractor back to the shed, just attach the wires that were hooked to the resistor together, but don't run it like that for more than a couple hours, or you will need to replace the points sooner than usual. You can get a new resistor at your local Case-IH dealership for right around $10.

Any good auto parts store will carry it or get it. Tell clerk you need a ballast resister for your coil.

It can also be replaced with a special resistance wire. Don't reduce the length of that wire.

No you won't get zapped. Your key switch will be off when you replace it. When energized, it is battery voltage anyway so don't worry.

The reason your 504 fires and quits is because your starter solinoid has an internal switch that bypasses the resisted circuit and sends full voltage to coil. This helps while starting the engine.

For optimum point life, get the correct replacement from your CNH dealer.
