The battery in my tractor is a year old and it keeps going dead i checked the water and it was a little low so i filled it and its on the charger right now. If this dosn't fix it what else could be wrong with it.How can I tell if the generator is actualy working

If you have the 4 position light switch with high and low charge make sure it is grounded to the light post. When that switch is on the second notch(high charge) it has to ground the field of the generator. This is done thru the light switch box. You can use a jumper wire and ground the field terminal on the generator and see if it charges then. If it does then the light swich box may not be grounding .

Clean the generator armature, see that the brushes are long enough, and pull the cover off the cut-out relay or regulator and clean the contacts with crocus cloth or non-metallic abrasive. A dollar bill will work also.

If the battery takes a charge and starts the tractor, you can look at the Ammeter and see if the needle is on the "+" side when the tractor is running at half throttle. If it is, current should be flowing to your battery. If you put a volt meter across the battery terminals, when the tractor is running, it should read 7 to 7.5 volts.

If the battery is going dead after sitting for a couple days, you might have a small short that is draining the battery. See if the Ammeter needle is a little on the "-" side when the tractor is off.

Be careful. When you charge the battery, hydrogen gas will be produced and if you create any spark, it can easily explode, showering you (and the tractor) with sulfuric acid and plastic shards. Wear safety glasses at a minumum. Read the cautions in the Operator's Manual.

At any rate, re-charging the battery probably won't fix the charging system on your tractor.

This may be a stupid question, but have you checked the fuse on the instrument panel?? Also, are the wires to the generator in good shape? On my '51 H, it wasn't charging so i replaced the fuse and wires and presto....it worked!! If these suggestions don't work you may need to rebuild your generator. --Jeff
