As I stated the first time I asked about these plows last week I have a 2-14" #8 plow. I can't seem to get moldboards and shares. I found a 3-14" IH plow for sale. The 3 bottom has different moldboards etc. I've done some research on the web but am still a bit confused. I see references to Plow chief and super chief. Parts for these seem available. I got a part # off the 3 bottom moldboard and it seems to match a plow chief number. What is plow chief and super chief referring to? Model? I also need terminology help. Moldboard is obvious. The share runs along the bottom of the moldboard, right? What is the shin? Is that the point? Also the main beams on the 3 are the same number as my 2 bottom. It appears I could change the frogs over to my 2-bottom and go.I think? Am I using the term "frog" right? I believe it's the part that attaches moldboard etc to the main beam. Sorry this is long winded. But I'm trying to explain as clearly as I can. Thanks for any and all help, Mike

Mike: The frog is the V shaped device bolted to the plow beam that all plowing parts bolt to. All plows have landsides, that being the flat part going along the landside of furrow. Moldboard, some are all one piece while others have a replacable shin at the front end of moldboard. These shins are usually tapered from 3 to 6 inches and same curve as moldboard. Point and share, some plows are one piece point and share, while others have two piece. The share is the blade going across bottom of moldboard and point will be 3" wide up to 10" going down right side of bottom.

To give you some examples pre 1962 IH used General Purpose bottom in most of US. In Canada Ace bottom. Near as I can tell, if your near the border you can have either. These two have one piece moldboard and shin and one piece point and share. Post 1960 most plow bottoms were first Plow Chief with separate moldboard, shin, share and point. They later went to Super Chief with separate moldboard and shin with one piece share and point. I believe there are also some variations. I didn' mention landsides in these examples as they all have landsides.

I have two plow parts books here covering about 50 different IH plows with examples of all bottoms. If you provide some frog and moldboard part numbers I'm sure I can figure what you have. Both plows.

Thanks Hugh for your very informative/helpful reply. The 3-bottom I'm looking at has a moldboard part# of 515710R1. Other than the main beams thats all I could find and/or get at. The 2-bottom I have now has a moldboard part # of 03132. That may only be a partial #. Anymore info you can give me is appreciated,Mike.

Mike: On part number 03132, this is a General Purpose bottom. It is one of about 25 General Purpose bottoms. This one is refered to as the "HSKA" high speed bottom. It can bolt to frog PO 14892. There are several shares available, Regular- 0554, Cobblestone- 0556, Alfalfa- 0580, Rice or Blackroot- 0574 and 16" oversize- 0670. Landsides are 02020, 02021 and 02024 This is all for 14" bottoms. Some numbers will change with 12' or 16" bottoms.

On part number 515710R1, I cant find the info I'm looking for on that one. I will say it is a modern number from plow chief or super chief bottoms. The problem I'm having with this is actual plow bottoms in the newer book are in a separate parts book which I don't have. Is this plow the type with trip bottoms? Look for plow beam part numbers on that one, even coulter, wheels, Those items should do it. I will be around home tomorrow, in and out but close by if you can get me some of those numbers, we should be able to nail it.

Mike: This is a new one on me, those plow beams are Little Genius. I didn't know they put plow chief or super chief bottoms on them. Problem with these two books I have is there is one in between them I don't have. List me some other part numbers like hitches, wheels, coulters, levers , etc. I'm on eastern time and I'm going to bed, if you come back I will respond in morning. That is if Dave with the fast hitch plow doesn't have another question.
