Just installed a 12 volt conversion kit on the M using the existing foot starter switch and kill switch. I was excited to see what happened when I got it all installed only to find that the starter still wouldn't spin.

Background: First attempts to start it a couple weeks ago... 6 volt setup/fresh battery... after messing around with the light switch and kicking the heck out of the starter switch a couple times the ole beast slowly turned the engine over a few times (the 6 volt grrrr...grrr...grrr). I tried it one last time (didn't know it was the last at the time) and got nothing and have had nothing since. Has the starter just gave up the ghost or what? I thought the starter switch could be bad so I "bypassed" it with no luck. The battery was hooked up correctly (positive ground) and all.

The conversion kit/harness was installed correctly as far as I can tell but that didn't fix the problem so I'm left thinking maybe its the starter. Could the starter switch be grounded out or something? While I was getting it to turn over, there was a smell from the switch box, I noticed the box was warm, and the battery cables got pretty warm as well.

Any ideas on what to do next (darned manual still hasn't arrived)? I've already found a guy to rebuild the starter (for $50???). I'm thinking of replacing the ammeter with a voltmeter and the foot switch with a push/flip switch if that would work in case one or both of them are bad. What size battery cables can I go down to with the 12 volt system (thought I'd change them just in case as well. One last thing, the push/pull kill switch couldn't have anything to do with it could it? The starter should turn even if it were bad, right? Thanks for any info or advice folks.

I just went thru the exact same thing on my 47 M, but i am not claiming to be an expert. However my Ford type solenoid starter switch was smokechecked and so was my coil. Bob M has the diagrams for wiring and i found out that i was missing the inline resistor between the coil and the starter switch, and the 20 amp fuse in the light panel which gives juice to the starter switch was blown as well. once i replaced those things my starter spun right over and the tractor starter in about 2 seconds. Good Luck.

Advice below is a good place to start. No, the on off button should not affect the starter turning over. My SMTA had a rod that connected to a lever on the starter to push the starter switch. I converted it to a push button, with your setup you would need a solenoid, ford type and your push button would activate it, if you want to go away from the foot button. The starter should roll fast with the 12 volt unless there is a problem inside of it or poor connections. The heat you mentioned us usually due to a bad connection. Try suggestion below, if still no luck I would pull the starter off and take it to the rebuilder to get it checked at least.

The heat was coming from the light switch I believe, which I've not wired back into the system and that didn't affect the problem. I'm gonna replace the battery and starter cables and make sure I have a good solid ground so that should take care of that end. I have to believe that its mainly the starter given what I know and what I've read. The starter guy said if I take it by in the morning he can have it finished by the afternoon so I may just go that route anyway since it probably needs it anyway.

Jamie,
Take a voltmeter and hook the positive lead up to the stud coming out of the starter that has the cable on it, next hook the negative lead to a good clean spot on the frame or neg battery cable.
While watching the meter, try to start it and see where the voltage goes to, if it drops below about ten volts I would replace my battery cables first. If that doesn't fix it or the voltage doesn't drop that much then I would pull the starter and get it looked at. This is all assuming you switched your tractor to negative ground and and the battery is good.
Hope this helps, jstpa

Better take the starter loose as it probably is locked up on the ring gear. Or you can put it in 5th gear and rock the tire until the fan turns.

Think thats the only problem? I already took the starter off and it didn't seem to be locked up (what do I know though... it came off easy enough, but then again I've never taken one off that I knew was locked up on it)

Okay,,,,here's how we've done it on the farm for ever,,,,,take the starter off and lay on the ground,,take a pair of jumper cables connected to a good hot battery and touch the ground to the starter,,,anywhere will be fine,,,now touch the positive to the lead on the starter and see if it turns,,,,if it spins and you think it sounds normal than you have other problems,,,,Don't worry it'll be fine,,,

Oh, I'm sure I do have other problems... I know chances are quite low that it'll start once I get the electrical side going... the old IH dealer (50 miles away) gave me the wrong tune up kit apparently (points aren't the same) and they stressed their "no returns on electrical parts" policy. I don't have the kit handy with the exact number, but it had the same Tisco part number as they sell on this site except it had an H on the end... I was told it was the right part. go figure. I'll just ebay it I guess to get some of my money back. I'm dying for the service manual to arrive so I have a clue of how to work on this thing. Was gonna try the jumper cable test, but haven't been able to locate my cables in my pile of tools and such(read junk).
