Went to an auction today amoung other items, I was looking for a mower. Didn't find it at the auction, but on way home stopped to see a guy. He asked about auction and what I was looking for. Took me out to drive shed and there a Woods 59" mower on a Farmall B with short laft axle like an A. I bought the mower plan to put it on my Super A. I see a couple of modifications need doing. As I see the tightening idlers have to be mounted differently. Fabrication will be the order of the day, any suggestions. How was the original Super A mount for that designed.

Looking to trade up my Woods 42 to a 59/L-59.
What is the going price for a new or used 59?
Are the 59's hard to find in Oklahoma?

To bad you didn't live closer to IL. I have a woods mower setup for a Super A that I will never use. I have the support that goes between the final drive housing and the mower is decent shape.

Shaggy: Thanks for the offer. Distance does tend to take away much of the saving one can get by buying used equipment. I have had great luck buying within 100 miles of home. Over the years I have bought a few items greater distance and transportation has always killed any benefit. I guess this is just one of the facts of life.

I had priced a new Woods, and really couldn't justify as I really only mow less than an acre. I had always used a push mower. As I age that was becomming less exciting. These little green, blue and red one cylinder monsters didn't really turn me on. Of course now my good better half really sees why I need three offset Farmalls. Judging from the number of people like myself looking for a good used Woods, my thoughts are if you ran a photo add, it would not be long until someone was pushing cash in your face. If I had 3 to 5 acres to mow I would take a new Woods real quick. I just couldn't see it for the little bit I mow.

Hugh, I think it best to go to a dealer and buy the mounting bracket from Woods. The angles on the idler pulleys has to be just so for the belt to run correctly. I used a Woods L 59 first on a Super A and then on a 140 for around 20 years to mow my property. I suppose there is both an L-59 and a 59 mower by Woods. The difference is in the throw or blade rotation. The L mower throwing to the left. Thus the blade mounting shafts have left hand threads. I got the belt on wrong once and the shafts were turning backwards. Threw one of the blades off in short order. Thankfully no damage. As I recall the bracket with the idler pulleys mounts to the front mounting holes on the final drives. There is a bar accross (maybe a piece of 2 inch pipe) that the piece holding the idler pulleys is welded to. Two heavy bars on each side extend downward. These have holes for pinning the bars that push the mower. My opinion on the gage wheels is that they are essential to get any kind of decent mowing job.

Haas: I helped remove this mower from the B yesterday and don't really see the mounting pivots from final drives as being a big problem. The mounting of the idlers, I see being a bit more difficult. I am going to woods dealer on Mon. to either get or order blades. At that time I will check into the mounting parts and how quickly they could get these and at what cost. Cost will be the factor on my decission.

I will say however, I do feel quite comfortable with fabrication. Over the years of farming I have designed belt drive systems as complex as these. I have even done some variable speed setups. As far as positioning the B is only two miles away, and he had used it for about 12 years on that tractor. Getting measurments will not be that difficult.

I started preparing my Super A for mounting the Woods mower today. I have had a 1 point fast hitch on it for about 15 years. With the belt system of mower coming to the belt pulley drive I could see the fast hitch interfereing with the belt. I have the 130 and 140 as well and really only have two good fast hitches, and the third hitch I can use as a parts supply. I put the U drawbar back on the Super A, so it will become my mower and trailer tractor. Since there is only me and ocasionally our son or son in law, I should be able to get my 2 acres of gardening done with 130 and 140. My good wife will not let me plant anymore garden than that as I religiously plow, till, plant and weed the garden then I loose all interest when it comes to harvest. She usually ends up giving 3/4 of it away if they harvest. That one only has marginal success as most harvesters are not fussy enough to suit the missus. She tells me that if I want to give away the fruits of my labour there are more worthy causes. But gosh, I hate painting a bedroom ceiling.

HUGH you can order the mounts for a B with the left axle removed. Now when you go to put it on an A it takes a different mount altogether. The B with the axle removed is still 4in wider than the A therefore the difference in the mounts. There are no bosses on the A to mount the idlers where the B still has the bosses on the drivers side for them to mount. Do you need pics of a mount for an A?

Bob: Thank you on that, I have a feeling I'm thinking as you describe. This mower has two gauge wheels on front, I gather it is an L-59, however lettering on deck 3" high is just 59 Woods or Woods 59 not exactly sure on the order on that.
