12 volt conversion model a farmall tractor

Could anyone e-mail me and tell me how to convert six volt system to a twelve volt system on a 1946 Farmall Model A tractor. I have read the conversion on a farmall super m tractor and it shows an external coil with a pos and neg post and the 1946 tractor I have has a coil with no post. So could someone explain to me how to convert this. Thank You

I wouldn't even consider converting anything smaller than an M, even the M doesn't need 12V with large cables and a properly maintained system. An A would probably start with 4 volts, if they made that kind of battery -- I know you didn't ask that!

As the other suggest you should be able to get your A to start reliably on 6 volts. However if you do want to go with 12 volts, do you plan to use a generator or alternator? Post back and I can email you a wiring diagram.

I do want to convert to 12 volt system and I plan to use an alternator. Could you please e-mail me any information on this conversion along with the wiring diagram. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

anyone have and sugestions on covnverting a super a to 12 volt using generator on tractor? do you have to use a 12 volt regulator on it. first conversion so i need all the help i can get

I have a '42 B (sn 88011) that I'm thinking about converting to 12 volt. What mods are needed on the top bracket and pulley? And did you use spacers with the bottom generator bolt or ?

I am slowly converting my small farmall fleet back to six volt, they were converted by previous owners. I have had to replace a ring gear and have had a lot of starter repairs on the 12 volt units. A propely tuned 6 volt tractor will run fine,has for 60 years. Easier to change the cables and ignition parts than a ring gear. "Originals" bring a better price at resale as well. But if you are determined, the Red Power forum a few days back had the same question with diagrams and parts suppliers.

You probably have a mag therefore no wires going to it just a wire for kill switch. You sure dont need to go to 12v on this engine mite need new 1ga cables or a starter rebuild. Mine will start anytime use 5w30 oil and have no problems.

I'm thinking about the long range - not many people around repair generators, and when they do, it's pricey. I don't like the look of the alternator hanging outside the sheet metal, but maybe someone will design an alternator that looks like a generator . . . hint, hint.
